21U Women Invitational: Games get underway at the very first edition of the event

Ottawa, ON – Action at Baseball Canada’s newest event kicked off with 3 games to start the tournament at Mainland Field in Halifax, NS. Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the hometown favourites, Nova Scotia all came out on the winning end of their match-ups.

Ontario 5 Québec 1

Marylena Florio (Woodbridge, ON) tossed five shutout innings allowing just a hit and a walk, while her offence pieced together five runs on seven hits as Ontario topped Québec 5-1 to open the inaugural 21U Women Invitational. Emma Carr (Toronto, ON) had two hits including a triple and scored two runs, while Emily Baxter (Oakville, ON) drove in a pair of runs.

Newfoundland and Labrador 16 Guyana 1

Guyana made history as their 21U Women’s team played in their first ever international game, but couldn’t match Newfoundland’s run production. Ketisha Hicks (Guyana) picked up the team’s first hit on Canadian soil in the meaningful match-up. Newfoundland’s starting pitcher Victoria Curran (Mount Pearl, NL) earned the win striking out 6 and allowing only 1 hit over 4 innings on the mound.

Nova Scotia 19 British Columbia 8

Nova Scotia gave the hometown fans something to cheer for as the offense came together to score 19 runs in the game. Starting pitching Sam Shupe (New Waterford, NS) earned the win recording 5 strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Four BC players had multi-RBI performances including Claire Eccles (White Rock, BC) who went 2 for 4 and drove in 3 runs. Nova Scotia’s Raelea Nickerson (Lower Sackville, NS) lead the offense going 3 for 5 while adding a double to the scoresheet and driving in 3 runs.
