Bantam Championships: Girls final set; boys still to be determined

OTTAWA – Ontario and Québec will battle for tournament supremacy when they face off for the Gold Medal in the bantam girls championship.  Both teams have cruised through the tournament so far with perfect 4-0 records, but only one will go home as champion.  First pitch is scheduled for Sunday at 4pm ADT.

The bantam boys tournament will feature the semi-finals and championship game on Sunday.  The semi-finals will be played in the morning while the Gold Medal game is scheduled to start at 6:30pm ET.  Ontario and BC already have spots in the semis due to their undefeated records.

Bantam Boys

New Brunswick 6  Nova Scotia 5

Brad Boulter’s (Oromocto, NB) single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Brett Brittany (Frederiction, NB) to give New Brunswick the walk off victory over Nova Scotia.  It was a fitting way to end the game as Boulter finished with three hits and two runs scored while Brittany scored three runs of his own.  The two combined to score five of New Brunswick’s six runs.  Colan McCullough (Kennetcook, NS) showed off his speed with three stolen bases in the loss.

Ontario 13  Québec 0

Ontario scored seven runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach and cruised to the five inning victory.  Five different players drove in at least two runs while eight different players scored at least one run, led by Ryan Koivu’s (Brampton, ON) three.  Cole White (Brampton, ON) threw five solid innings on the mound and also collected two RBI at the plate.

BC 10 Vaughan 5

BC had three separate three run innings, including one in the seventh inning, which helped them defeat Vaughan by a 10-5 score.  Malik Gleason (Surrey, BC) was outstanding both offensively and defensively in this game, picking up is ninth and tenth RBI of the tournament and striking out ten batters on the mound to pick up the win.  Matthew Bondy (Windsor, ON) and Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) both hit home runs in the loss.

Alberta 6  Newfoundland and Labrador 5

Alberta started the game off slow by giving up four first inning runs, but managed to chip away at the Newfoundland lead to eventually steal the victory with a 6-5 win.  They scored the game-winning run in their last at-bat in the seventh inning off off a Peter Hutzal (Calgary, AB) single that scored Austin Ely (Calgary, AB).  Both players finished the game with three hits.  Newfoundland starting pitcher Tyler Hennessey (Conception Bay South, NL) pitched well in the loss going six and one-third innings.

Manitoba 9  Québec 4

Three six inning runs from Manitoba to extend their lead to five runs was too much to overcome for Québec as Manitoba won the game.  Second baseman Christian Peters (Winnipeg, MB) had three hits and three RBI in the game to lead the Manitoba offense while Chase Dreger (Oak Bluff, MB) grabbed the win, coming within one out of netting the complete game.  Thomas Morissette (Ste-Julie, QC) scored three of his team’s four runs in a losing cause.

PEI 14  Saskatchewan 6

PEI scored early and often to pick up the victory over Saskatchewan.  Their 18 hits contributed heavily to scoring 14 runs, and four players had three hits each.  Jayden MacLean (Summerside, PE) and  Porter Smith (North River, PE) were two of those players, and they also combined to drive in five runs.  Kyle Pinksen (Kensington, PE) picked up the win pitching five solid innings, but couldn’t find away to keep Dylan Flasch (Lloydminster, SK) off the base paths as he reached base in all four of his plate appearances.

Manitoba 8  PEI 4

Manitoba took advantage of a PEI teams that played only an hour earlier and defeated them 8-4.  Luxon Glor (Winnipeg, MB) stood out offensively for Manitoba going to 2/4 with four RBI.  He also started the game on the mound and ended up getting the win.  PEI’s first three hitters all ended up with two hits apiece in a losing effort.

Québec 12  Vaughan 0

Québec’s offense came out swinging and could not be stopped in the game.  They scored at least one run in every inning in the five inning affair.  Olivier Lacharite (Ste-Julie, QC) was a stud offensively, driving in seven runs with his three hits.  Oscar Rodriguez (Montréal, QC) was strong on the mound striking out eight and walking none in his five innings of work.

Bantam Girls

Semi-final #1

Québec 10  Chicago (USA) 0

With a gold medal birth on the line, Québec stepped up in a big way pouring out all ten of their runs in the first four innings en route to the five inning mercy victory.  Chicago didn’t help themselves in this game, committing five errors leading to many more opportunities for Québec then there should have been.  Marie-Andrée Rousseau (Blainville, QC) scored two of her team’s runs while also going a perfect 3/3 at the plate, and the pitching staff did the rest of the work allowing only four hits all game.

Semi-final #2

Ontario 11 Nova Scotia 1

Ontario punched their ticket to the gold medal match with a convincing ten run victory over Nova Scotia in five innings.  They wasted little time getting started by going out and grabbing five runs in their first at-bat to put Nova Scotia down early.  Ontario would add another five runs in the third to officially put the game out of reach.  Nine different players scored at least one run, including three from Marylena Florio (Woodbridge, ON), who also pitched the first two and two thirds innings.
