Baseball Canada Championships: Week 3's opening day comes to close

OTTAWA – Players were able to take the field in Vaughan, ON during the second half of the day on Thursday for some 15U Championship competition. All ten games scheduled for the day were able to be played for the event to remain on schedule going into Friday.

The 13U National Championship in Repentigny, QC had three more game that were played out including a match-up between the host team Lanaudière and Québec (QC1).

At the Senior Men Championship in Chatham, NB, the long awaited first game of the Chatham Ironmen was held at Ironmen field where many were in attendance to cheer on the home team. That game and all other Senior Men games can be watched live online here.

Here’s all the action from the second half of day 1:

13U National Championship

Ontario (ON3) 9 Saskatchewan 2 – Aaron Rutherford (London, ON) and Sam McLaurin (London, ON) both went 2 for 3 driving in 2 runs to help Ontario’s offensive production. Reliever Jacob Bishop (Kitchener, ON) earned the win for Ontario shutting out the opposition over 1.2 innings.

British Columbia 18 Québec (QC2) 6 – In an impressive offensive performance, Carlin Dick (Abbotsford, BC) homered twice and drove in 5 runs to lead BC to the win. Philip Antoine Donaldson (Outaouais, QC) homered for Québec but it wasn’t enough to match the opposition.

Lanaudière 10 Alberta 3 – Host team Lanaudière gave home fans something to cheer for in their 10-3 win over Alberta. William Lacroix (Laval, QC) went 2 for 4 driving in 4 runs while Benjamin Sauve (Lanaudière, QC) went 3 for 4 with a double and a home run.

15U Championship

Manitoba 16 PEI 0 – Manitoba’s offense put up 16 runs over 4 innings to secure the victory against PEI. Tristan Peters (Winkler, MB) lead the production going 3 for 3 including a triple with 2 RBIs and scoring 3 times. Starter Martin Gisiger (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win despite only facing 2 batters before leaving the game.

Saskatchewan 10 Newfoundland 4 – The match-up resumed later in the day after a rain delay in Vaughan, ON. Saskatchewan topped Newfoundland by a score of 10-4 in their first game of the tournament.

Alberta 2 Nova Scotia 0 – Alberta’s matchup against Nova Scotia was delayed due to rain as well but resumed later on. Alberta topped Nova Scotia by a score of 2-0.

Ontario 11 British Columbia 3 – Ethan Hammond (Oakville, ON) and Ryan Douglas (Georgetown, ON) both tripled and drove in 2 runs in the win for Ontario. Starter Noah Naylor earned the win allowing 1 run on 1 hit over 2 innings while striking out 3.

Québec 10 New Brunswick 0 – Québec’s 4-run innings in both the 5th and 6th put New Brunswick in a hole too big to climb out of. Starter Luis-Armando Gutierrez-Cyr earned the win tossing 3 hitless innings for Québec while striking out 8 of 13 batters faced.

Nova Scotia 4 Newfoundland 3 – Nova Scotia took the lead by putting up 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th and held on to win it. Reliever Dyton Blackett (Kentville, NS) earned the win allowing only 1 hit over 2.2 innings while striking out 4.

Manitoba 5 Saskatchewan 4 – Starter Owen Harms (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win for Manitoba allowing only 1 run on 1 hits over 3 innings while striking out 6. Adam Senden (Winnipeg, MB) went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs to lead his team’s offensive production.

PEI 4 Alberta 2 – Tyson McInnis (Peakes, PE) went 2 for 3 with a double and a RBI to help his team to the 4-2 win over Alberta. Starter Eric Anderson (Charlottetown, PE) earned the win allowing 1 run over 3 innings while striking out 6.

Québec 7 Vaughan 4 – Host Vaughan fell to Québec by a score of 7-4. Québec’s 5 run inning in the bottom of the 4th was the difference maker as it gave them the lead that would last the rest of the game. Starter Viktor Bergeron (Terrebonne, QC) earned the win allowing3 runs over 3.2 innings while striking out 7.

British Columbia 14 New Brunswick 4 – Matt Collett (Victoria, BC) went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple driving in 1 run in his teams win. Noah Doorschot (Victoria, BC) earned the win for BC allowing only 2 hits over 2 innings on the mound while striking out 3.

Senior Men Championship

Manitoba 6 Saskatchewan 3 – JP Willner (Regina, SK) and Jace Muggli’s (Saskatoon, SK) back to back home runs gave Saskatchewan a 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd, but didn’t last as Manitoba came back to win it 6-3. Matt Mutcheson (Morden, MB) recovered after giving up the two long balls and tossed a complete game striking out 10 to earn the win.

British Columbia 8 Chatham 3 – Dave Hole’s (Vancouver, BC) 3-run shot in the top of the 3rd proved to be the difference in the game as it extended BC’s lead to 5. Shane Kraemer (Chilliwack, BC) earned the win allowing 2 runs on 7 hits and 1 walk over 6 innings.
