Baseball Canada Championships: Four champions crowned!

OTTAWA-Four more national champions were crowned today as the Senior Women Invitation, Senior Men, 15U Boys and 13U all handed our hardware to their gold, silver and bronze medal winners.

Ten of 11 Baseball Canada National Championships are in the books with the DQ® 13U National Atlantic Championship to be played September 8-11 in Mount Pearl, Newfoundland.

Senior Men

Gold: Tecumseh (ON1) 4 Strathroy (ON2) 3

Tecumseh survived a late charge from Strathroy to claim their second consecutive National Championship at the Senior Men level with a 4-3 win in an all-Ontario final. Curtis Lambkin (Lakeshore, ON) and Mitch Delaney (LaSalle, ON) both homered, and Joel Pierce (Windsor, ON) went five and two-third innings on the mound before Billy Hurley (Mississauga, ON) came on to nail down the win. Strathroy scored three unearned runs in the sixth thanks to three Tecumseh errors and had two runners on with one in the seventh before a 6-4-3 double play ended the game.

Bronze: Fredericton (Host) 10 Charlottetown (NB) 0

Jody Peterson (Fredericton, NB), Mike Washburn (Fredericton, NB) and Corey Wood (Fredericton, NB) each slugged home runs, while Sam Lund (Moncton, NB) allowed just two hits over five shutout innings as Fredericton sent the hometown fans home happy with a 10-0 win over Charlottetown (New Brunswick representative) to win bronze.

Brandon Lindquist (Tecumseh, ON) fired seven shutout innings, while an error led to the only run of the ballgame scoring as Tecumseh (ON1) scored a 1-0 win over New Brunswick in one of the semi final games.

Ron Oneson’s (London, ON) RBI single in the sixth proved to be the difference as Strathroy (ON2) beat host Fredericton, 1-0 to reach the gold medal game. Tyler Annett (St. Thomas, ON) struck out nine over seven-shutout innings to record the win. Shane Kraemer (Chilliwack, BC) was equally impressive for Fredericton as he allowed just one run on five hits, two walk and seven strikeouts in the loss.

Senior Women

Gold: BC 9 Ontario 8

Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh that brought the winning run home in a wild contest that saw BC win gold over Ontario, 9-8. BC scored eight runs in the home half of the second inning to erase a 1-0 Ontario lead, but Ontario kept coming and tied the score in the top of the seventh. Asay pitched BC into the gold medal game earlier in the day and drove in three runs in the gold medal game with a two run single in the second along with the winning run in the seventh. BC starter Claire Eccles (White Rock, BC) worked three innings and was on the mound for two runs (one earned) before giving way to Ella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC) who fanned seven over the final four innings. Ontario’s Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON) did a tremendous job on the mound coming into the game down by seven and pitched four scoreless frames before the winning run came home in the seventh. Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) and Brittany Chan (Richmond Hill, ON) each knocked in a pair of runs for Ontario.

Bronze: Alberta 8 Québec 5

Samantha Ostrom (Calgary, AB) was solid on the mound for five innings, while Alberta received a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI from Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) to defeat Québec, 8-5, in the bronze medal game. Alberta built a 7-1 lead after five but allowed Québec to get back into the game committing nine errors over the final two innings.

BC received a complete-game effort from Amanda Asay and Ella Matteucci went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI as they beat Québec, 7-2, in the semi-finals. Ontario rallied with two runs in the sixth to tie the score and scored four in the seventh as they clinched a spot in the gold medal game with a 6-2 win over Alberta. Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) drove in four runs and Autumn Mills (London, ON) struck out five in a complete-game effort on the mound.

15U Boys

Gold: Ontario 2 Québec 1

Justin Bradt (Burlington, ON) and Stanley Dean (Harrow, ON) limited to Québec to just two hits, while Ontario received an RBI double from Ashton Feijo (Mississauga, ON) as part of a two run third inning en route to a 2-1 win in the gold medal contest at the 15U Boys National Championship in Summerside, PEI. Bradt tossed three shutout innings and did not allow a hit, while walking three and striking out one batter. After Feijo’s RBI double in the third, a two out error scored what turned out to be the game-winning run. Québec’s Nicolas Tremblay (St-Hyacinthe, QC) came up with an RBI single in the seventh to cut the lead to one, but was caught stealing before Dean got a groundout to end the game.

Following the game, Ontario was presented with the inaugural "Ray Carter Cup" in honour of Baseball Canada's former President.

Bronze: BC 7 Alberta 0

Theo Millas (Burnaby, BC) struck out 13 batters over six shutout innings of work to lead BC to a 7-0 win over Alberta in the bronze medal contest. BC jumped out to a 4-0 advantage in the first with RBI single from Millas, Nicklas Holdershaw (Surrey, BC) and Justin Thorsteinson (Richmond, BC).

Québec received home runs from Philippe Breton (Repentigny, QC) and Jason Bégin (Sherbrooke, QC) to defeat Alberta 12-2 in on semi final match-up, while Ontario got an 11-strikeout performance from Keegan Thorpe (Newmarket, ON) in a 5-1 victory over BC in the other semi.

In placement games, host Summerside beat Manitoba, 4-2 to finish ninth; Nova Scotia topped New Brunswick 11-2 to finish seventh, and PEI defeated Newfoundland & Labrador 11-7 to place fifth.

DQ® 13U National

Gold: Brampton (ON1) 16 Mauricie (QC2) 6

Nelson Schotborgh Mercado (Brampton, ON) homered and drove in four as his side put up 21 hits to cruise to a gold medal with a 16-6 win over Mauricie in game that was decided in only five innings due to the mercy rule. Brampton’s Sebastien Khan (Brampton, ON) tossed five innings on the mound and struck out five and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and 4 RBI to contribute to the win. Seven Brampton players had extra base hits, while eight players in the line up had multi hit games. Mauricie’s Thomas Pichette (Maskinongé, QC) put the finishing touches on a strong tournament at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance including his second home run of the event.

Bronze: London (Host) 8 Saskatchewan 5

After suffering a heartbreaking loss to Brampton in the semi final game, host London rallied with an 8-5 win over Saskatchewan to win the bronze medal. Jack Morris (London, ON) and Nikko Khananisho (Toronto, ON) each homered for London, while Evan Burns (London, ON) fired two and a third shutout innings of relief. Brodie Guenther (Warman, SK) homered in the loss for Saskatchewan and had three RBI.

Cole Iantomasi’s (Whitby, ON) RBI single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and gave Brampton a 4-3 win over London in one of two semi final games this morning. Mauricie (QC2) reached the gold medal contest with an 8-5 win over Saskatchewan where Thomas Pichette homered and drove in three, and Xavier Céré struck out five over three and a third scoreless innings.

In placement games, Rive-Sud (QC1) beat BC 7-0 to claim ninth; Québec (QC3) blanked Atlantic, 2-0 to place seventh and Alberta beat Barrie (ON2), 10-4 for fifth.
