Canada Cup - Ontario and BC to play for Gold

OTTAWA - Ontario is one step closer to defending their Canada Cup title after defeating Manitoba by a score of 13-3.  After getting off to a slow start, Ontario increased the intensity in a big way to help catapult them into tonight’s final.  Joining them will be the team from BC, who knocked off Québec in a come from behind win.  BC will be looking for revenge as they were defeated by Ontario in both their round robin matches.

Manitoba and Québec will play in the Bronze Medal match up beginning at 4:30pm ET.

Ontario 13  Manitoba 3

Looking to book their ticket to the final, Manitoba got off to a strong start by taking a 2-0 lead heading into the third inning thanks to a Matt Dunstone (Winnipeg, MB) RBI single and Luke Horanski (Cooks Creek, MB) RBI triple.  However, they couldn’t hold on to that lead as Ontario scored at least one run in every inning the rest of the way en route to a 13-3 victory.  Justin Orton (Ruthven, ON) set the tone offensively for Ontario, coming a home run shy of hitting for the cycle while also finishing with four RBI.  Having one the Canada Cup last year, Ontario will be looking to defend their title when they play host to the winner of Québec vs. BC.

BC 6  Québec 4

After Québec scored two runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead, BC sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs in the bottom half en route to a 6-4 come from behind victory.  With one run already scored and the bases still loaded, first baseman Dawson Yates (Kelowna, BC) put his stamp on the game with a bases-clearing grand slam home run.  Closer Connor Noble (Vancouver, BC) threw two innings the rest of the way to shut down the Québec offense.  BC will be looking for their third Gold Medal in the past four years.

Along with the medal round games taking place today were the placement games.  Games completed to date saw Newfoundland defeat New Brunswick and Saskatchewan edge PEI. Nova Scotia and Alberta play later in the day.

Newfoundland and Labrador 6  New Brunswick 5

Newfoundland and Labrador scored two runs in the sixth inning and held on to squeak by New Brunswick 6-5.   Matthew Flynn (Gander, NL) pitched the last two and one-third innings to earn the win.

Saskatchewan 12  PEI 3

A seven run second inning help blow the game open as Saskatchewan cruised to the victory over PEI.  Four players had at least two RBI, including Jordan Schultz’s (Strasbourg, SK) three.
