Canada-Japan Women’s Series: Canada White to play for gold

GRANBY, QC- Canada White (2-2) punched their ticket to Sunday’s gold medal game with a 9-0 shutout win over the Saitama Sakae Beavers at the Canada-Japan Women’s Series today.

Canada White will take-on the Saitama Sakae Orange (3-1) who defeated Canada Red 13-6 this afternoon.

Canada Red (2-2) will take-on the Saitama Sakae Beavers for the bronze medal (1-3).

Daniella Matteucci (Fruitvale, BC), Brittany Chan (Richmond Hill, ON) and Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) combined to blank the Saitama Sake Beavers 9-0 earning a trip to tomorrow’s gold medal game.

Canada White had 12 hits, while the Beavers had nine but left ten runners on base.

Nicole Luchanksi (Edmonton, AB) singled to lead-off the game, stole second, advanced to third on a wild-pitch and scored on a passed ball for all of the offence Canada White would need.

Luchanski, along with Jenna Flannigan (Cornwall, ON), Jennifer Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) and Stacey Fournier (Langley, BC) had two hits each including a double from Fournier and triple from Flannigan.

Up by four, Canada White put the game out of reach with a four-run inning in the top of the sixth.

Saitama Sakae Orange 13 Canada Red 6

The Saitama Sakae Orange exploded for eight runs in the top of the sixth erasing a one-run Canada Red lead in a 13-6 Orange win

The win clinched first place for the Orange and ensured them a spot in tomorrow’s gold medal game.

Stéphanie Savoie (Québec, QC) and Meagan Cornelssen (Grande-Prairie, AB) each had a single and a double, while Savoie also drove in two.

The eight run sixth came on six hits and one Canada Red error.

Canada Red 8 Saitama Sakae Beavers 4

After being postponed last night due to inclement weather, Canada Red pounded-out 11 hits to earn an 8-4 win over the Saitama Sakae Beavers.

Lia Rodriguez (Edmonton, AB) gave Canada Red four solid innings on the mound, while Sabrina Periard (Gatineau, QC) and Daphnée Gelinas (Le Gardeur, QC) shut the door in the latter innings to preserve the win.

Canada Red received two-hit performances from Stéphanie Savoie, Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) and Meagan Cornelssen.

Savoie tripled and scored two runs, while Cornelssen crossed home plate three times.

Notes: The bronze medal game between Canada Red and the Saitama Sakae Beavers begins at 10am ET, while the gold medal game featuring Canada White and the Saitama Sakae Orange gets underway at 3pm ET.
