Davis and Gilbert win Sports Officials Canada Awards

OTTAWA-Corrie Davis (Sherwood Park, AB) and Don Gilbert (LaSalle, ON) have each been recognized with awards from the Sport Officials of Canada.

Davis, the National Supervisor of Umpires for Baseball Canada is the male award winner for the National Officiating Awards Program recognizing a male and a female technical official/judge who have made a significant contribution to officiating at the national and international level presented by Fox 40 International Inc.

Corrie has been a technical official in his chosen sport for 28 years. During an illustrious officiating career, he umpired at 5 World Championships and served as a Supervisor at an additional 3 World Championship competitions. In 2009 he was one of eight umpires selected to work at the Word Baseball Classic in Puerto Rico. In 2011 Davis was one of five umpires selected worldwide to form the new IBAF Umpires Commission.

Domestically, Davis umpired at 6 National Championships and acted as a supervisor/evaluator at 6 additional National Championship events. While his on-field achievements are prolific, his off-field contribution to officiating and umpire development is equally impressive. Over the past 16 years he has instructed at over 80 umpire clinics throughout Canada.

Gilbert, the former National Supervisor of Umpires for Baseball Canada, is the recipient of the Allen G. Rae Builder Award for his significant contribution to sports official's development and advancement. Gilbert epitomizes the words, dedication and excellence in sport officiating. His involvement in his chosen sport covers a period in excess of 30 years, his impact on baseball umpiring nationally and internationally is immeasurable.

Gilbert officiated at 6 World Championships, the 1988 and 1990 World Cups and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He also participated as a Supervisor in 7 international events, including the 1999 Pan-Am Games and the 2008 Women's World Cup in Japan. Nationally his record as an umpire is unsurpassed but his most significant contribution came at the Supervisor level. At the Provincial level he served as the Ontario Supervisor of Umpires from 1996 until 2000. Nationally he participated in 8 National Championships, including 3 Canada Summer Games and served as the National Supervisor of Umpires for Baseball Canada for 11 years. Known as an excellent instructor he taught at Provincial and National clinics for twenty years.

His dedication to improving officiating in his sport has been recognized through various awards. He was named the Baseball Ontario Umpire of the Year in 1992 and the Baseball Canada Umpire of the Year in 1997. In 2009 he was inducted into the Windsor, Ontario Sports Wall of Fame.

The awards will be presented on Saturday September 22, 2012 at the Sports Officials Canada Annual Awards Dinner, being held in conjunction with their annual conference at the Delta Bessborough in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
