Day 2 underway in Prince George and Saskatoon

OTTAWA – Day 2 has begun out west at both the Senior Nationals and Peewee Western Championships.  There are four games scheduled for today in the men’s tournament while the Peewee’s have a full day ahead.

Senior Nationals

Ontario (1) 2  Nova Scotia 1

It was a pitchers duel throughout the game as the score remained 0-0 heading into the seventh inning.  Nova Scotia scored one run in the top half of the inning but were unable to hold onto it as Ontario scored two in the bottom half to steal away the win.   Tyler Plumpton (Peterborough, ON) drove in the winning run to give Ontario the victory.  John Picco (South Woodslee, ON) picked up the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings.

New Brunswick 5  Ontario (2) 2

Derek Wilson (Fredericton, NB) hit a three run walkoff homerun to cap of an amazing comeback in the bottom of the seventh.  Down 2-0 heading into the inning, New Brunswick scored all five runs to run away with the win.  Jake Waugh (Fredericton, NB) kept his team in it throughout the game and it paid off in the end as he earned the win pitching a complete game.

Peewee Western Championships

Saskatchewan (1) 10  Manitoba (2) 0

Eight different Saskatchewan players scored runs in what turned out to be 10-0 victory.  The game was close up until the fourth inning when Saskatchewan plated eight runs to take a commanding 9-0 lead.  They would score one more run an inning later to win via the mercy rule.  Jayden Lorenz (Regina, SK) was brilliant on the mound in his five innings of work as he didn’t give up a run and struck out 11 Manitoba hitters.

Alberta (2) 14  BC 4

Alberta handed BC their fist loss of the tournament with a convincing 14-4 victory in five innings of play.  Austin Dorochuk (Stony Plain, AB), Matt Senkoe-Gough (Spruce Grove, AB) and Zach Olson (Red Deer, AB) combined for 12 RBI to lead Alberta to the victory.  Olson also flashed his power game by hitting two home runs.  Pitcher Connor McKinnon (Fort McMurray, AB) was efficient in pitching all five innings to pick up the win.  BC’s Tanner Carmont (Surrey, BC) drove in two runs in a losing cause.
