OTTAWA- Kellin Deglan has only been in Australia for a few months, but now finds himself in the Australian Baseball League’s record books.
The 22 year-old catcher and former Junior National Team star clubbed his league leading 16th homer of the season on January 3rd that also set the new mark for most long-balls in an ABL season.
A member of the Melbourne Aces, he has been on a tear of late swatting five home runs in his last four games, including two on New Year’s Day and two more two days later to tie and break the previous home run standard set by his Aces teammate Brad Harman.
The former first round pick of Texas Rangers back in 2010, the Langley, BC native just completed his fifth professional season in the Rangers organization where he split time between Single-A Hickory and High-A Myrtle Beach.
Upon arriving in Melbourne in October for the start of the ABL season, Deglan has proceeded to hit .279 and drive-in a league-high 33 runs in 36 games played.
A member of the Junior National Team program in 2009 and 2010, Deglan participated in the 2010 World Junior Baseball Championships held in Thunder Bay, Ontario and later received the Junior National Team MVP Award. In 2012, he was a member of the Senior National Team that won the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Regensburg, Germany.
