Down on the Farm – Volume 2

OTTAWA-‘Down on the Farm’ is a regular feature on Baseball.ca that will highlight Canadian’s in the minor leagues. This week we profile 3 players to watch for as the minor league season moves forward.

INF Chris Bisson - (Orleans, ON) Lake Elsinore Storm (Padres) High A

Bisson jumped a level to High A at the end of Spring Training and has contributed early for a Storm club that is hovering around the .500 mark. The versatile Bisson is seeing time mainly at shortstop and can also play second and third base as well as the outfield if need be. A 4th round selection of the Padres in 2010 after a stellar 3 year career at the University of Kentucky, Bisson was a member of the 2011 Senior National Team that took home the Bronze Medal at the World Cup in Panama and later captured the Gold Medal at the Pan Am Games last October. So far this season, Bisson is hitting .272 with 1 home run, 11 RBI and 4 stolen bases.

Jordan Lennerton – (Langley, BC) Erie SeaWolves (Tigers) Double A

After two seasons at the High A level, Lennerton is off to a hot start with the Erie SeaWolves in the Double A Eastern League. Carrying a .296 batting average, Lennerton has clubbed 8 home runs and driven in 25 runs through 37 games with the SeaWolves. A Junior National Team graduate back in 2004, Lennerton went the Junior College route for 2005 and 2006 before transferring to powerhouse Oregon State where he was a member of the College World Series winning team in 2007. The Tigers drafted Lennerton in the 33rd round in 2008 and this is his fifth season with the organization.

Dustin Molleken – (Regina, SK) Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Rockies) Triple A

Molleken had an invite to big-league camp with the Rockies in Spring Training and appeared in three games before being sent to the minors. A key member of the bullpen for the Senior National Team that claimed Bronze at the World Cup and Gold at the Pan Am Games last fall, Molleken began the season at Triple A for the first time in his career. Pitching in the hitter friendly Pacific League, the hard-throwing right-hander has thrown 16 1/3 innings for the Sky Sox and has 15 strikeouts and a 4.96 ERA to go along with his 2-0 won/loss record. Molleken was originally selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15th round of the 2003 draft and spent six seasons in the Pirates organization before signing with the Rockies prior to the 2011 season.
