MLB, Baseball Canada, Adidas bring Canada's best young talent to Olympic Stadium
Wednesday, September 17, 2003
Major League Baseball assembled a group of Canada's top junior age baseball players to participate in the Fourth Annual Adidas Junior Elite Baseball Camp.
Major League Baseball, Baseball Canada and Adidas hosted forty eight 15 - 16 year-old aspiring "big leaguers" at Montreal's Olympic Stadium from September 12th to 15th for high-performance baseball skill training usually reserved for players in the major leagues.
"Major League Baseball's goal is to help these young people have a greater appreciation of baseball and the skills necessary to compete at the major league level," said Mike McClellan, Major League Baseball International. "We believe that the combined on-field training and classroom instruction for the Adidas Junior Elite Baseball Camp will help provide these young men the best opportunity to achieve success on and off the baseball diamond."
The players participated in three-days of fundamental skills training in hitting, pitching, infielding, outfielding, catching and baserunning. On the final day of the elite camp, participants formed two teams to participate in an inter-squad game that saw Canada West defeat Canada East by a score of 8-5.
In addition to the on-field training, the young men participated in a series of "Life Skills" classroom seminars arranged by Major League Baseball and Adidas. Seminar topics included the MLB experience with Brad Wilkerson of the Montreal Expos, Scouting and Player Development with Denis Boucher and Kevin Briand, Strength and Conditioning with Jeff Krushell and the National Team Program with Greg Hamilton. "The nature of the high performance Adidas Junior Elite Baseball Camp will allow these talented young Canadian players the opportunity to refine their skills while preparing them for competition at the next level," said Greg Hamilton, Head Coach and Director of National Teams for Baseball Canada.
Instructors included Brad Mills and Rob Natal, Montreal Expos; former Major Leaguer's Claude Raymond and Denis Boucher, Kevin Briand, Director of Canadian Scouting, Toronto Blue Jays; Ian Jordan of the MLB Scouting Bureau, and Greg Hamilton, Head Coach and Director of National Team Programs for Baseball Canada.
