Major League Baseball draft and the 2002 Canadian vintage
Friday, May 31, 2002
June 4th and 5th Major League Baseball will hold its annual amateur player draft. The 2002 Canadian vintage could be the best ever. Every year many Canadian players are drafted by different major league organizations. Scott Thorman, of Cambridge, On, saw the Braves use the 30th pick overall in 2000 to make him the highest Canadian player drafted out of highschool and Kevin Nicholson of Surrey, BC was drafted 27th overall by the San Diego Padres in 1997 and he has been the highest Canadian draftee ever, so far.
2002 could see not one but two players drafted earlier than Nicholson was. Adam Loewen from Surrey, BC, as Nicholson is and Jeff Francis from North Delta, BC are among the most highly regarded talent in the 2002 draft according to most specialized papers like USA Today and Baseball America.
Baseball Canada is proud to promote Canadian Baseball across North America through its excellence programs. Greg Hamilton, head coach of the Junior National Team that will compete in the World Junior Championship to be played in Sherbrooke, Qc, says: "I have seen my share of great Canadian Baseball players over the years I have been involved with Baseball Canada National teams and the 2002 vintage stands out alone with two players of Loewen and Francis strength. They could both go very early in the draft and many others Canadian players could have a chance to live their dream of playing professional baseball".
The Junior National Team will hold its summer training camp from July 4th to July 14th in Guelph,On, before starting a Canadian tour that will reach its peak August 1st to the 11th for the World Junior Championship at Sherbrooke the Am}eacute;d}eacute;-Roy Stadium.
