Bay Named NL Rookie of the Year

Monday, November 8, 2004

OTTAWA – Jason Bay of Trail, B.C., today was named the National League Rookie of the Year, as selected by the Baseball Writers Association of America.

Bay, a member of Baseball Canada’s 1996 national junior team and 2001 senior team which competed in the World Cup tournament in Taiwan, received 25 first-place votes and seven second-place votes from the BBWAA on his way to picking up 146 points, ahead of San Diego’s Khalil Greene, who placed second with 108 points.

Despite only playing 120 games this past season after missing the entire month of April recovering from a shoulder injury, Bay hit .282 with 26 HR and 82 runs batted in for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The 26-year-old Bay is the first Canadian and first Pirates player to win the award, officially named the Jackie Robinson Award, honoring the first recipient in 1947 who broke baseball’s color barrier.

“An award of this magnitude signifies Jason’s talent and his dedication to the game of baseball,” said Greg Hamilton, Baseball Canada’s director of national teams who coached Bay on the national junior team in 1996. “Jason has always represented his country with pride and our organization shares in the national pride for him as both a player and person.”

Bay, who set a Canadian MLB rookie record with 26 home runs this season, is the second Baseball Canada alumnus in as many years to win an MLB major award. Éric Gagné won the NL’s Cy Young Award last year as the league’s top pitcher.

Bay had previously won the Players’ Choice Award as the NL’s Outstanding Rookie of 2004 and The Sporting News NL Rookie of the Year award.

Player of the Week

Kiera (MB )

Week of June 21, 2010:

Kiera, as a first time participant in the Rally Cap Program has shown great enthusiasm from the first practice. She has recently shown how terrific of a "little slugger" she is. She consistently gets up to the "T" and hits the ball past the infield. Kiera has also learned to "run like the wind" when she sees another player hit the ball when she is a runner on base. We love to watch Kiera play T-ball and her infectious smile makes all spectators smile as well. We are proud of you, Kiera!
