St Marys,ON - Baseball Canada's National Junior Team played the United States Junior Team today in the Hall of Fame Classic held in St-Marys, ON. David Davidson of Thorold, ON started on the mound for Canada, while the US team started Michael Rogers. In the first inning, USA Head Coach Edgar Soto's men had five hits, two of which were homeruns, against Davidson to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Canada scored once when Jason Gotwalt batted in Chris Emanuele with a sacrifice fly to right field. USA leadoff hitter Ian Stewart hit a solo homerun in the fourth inning to give his team a three run lead. In the fifth, Delmon Young hit a two run homerun to increase the lead to five runs but Canada's designated hitter Jamie Romak hit a solo shot to put Canada back to within four runs. In the top of the seventh, Delmon Young hit his second homerun of the day, his third in two days, collecting his third and fourth RBI of the afternoon. Team Canada responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the gap, making the score 8-6 for the United States. The Canadian rally began with Adam Loewen's solo homerun to deep right-center field, giving some hope to his teammates. The next five batters reached base but the rally was killed when Russell Smithson hit a hard line drive directly at shortstop Justin Tordi, a Toronto Blue Jays draft pick, who turned it into a double play. In the top of the eighth, the US scored another three runs and then snuffed out any hope for the Canadian squad by scoring five more in the ninth. The slugfest ended 18-9 in favour of the Americans. Team Canada and Team USA fly to Thunder Bay tomorrow to play in the Nation's Cup on July 23rd and 24th, before playing in Ottawa July 26th to the 28th in the International Cup. The World Junior Championship begins August 1st in Sherbrooke, QC. Game summary
