Hosts End Day 1 With Thrilling Victories at 13U and Senior Men’s Championships

Ottawa, ON – In the 13U Division, Spruce Grove, Alberta, held off a furious comeback attempt from Saskatoon to earn a two run victory, while over in Windsor, Ontario, at the Senior Men’s Championships, the host squad needed extra innings to defeat Alberta. 

 

13U Peewee Western

Sherwood Park (AB1) 12  North Winnipeg (MB2) 2

Sherwood Park scored four runs in three separate innings to defeat Winnipeg by ten runs.  Brayden Cust had a very strong day at the plate with a home run, four RBI, and three runs scored.  Winnipeg’s Jalen Richard had two hits and a RBI in his team’s losing effort. 

South Central (MB1) 8  St. Albert (AB2) 2

Tied 2-2 heading into the fourth inning, South Central exploded for five runs to pull away from St. Albert.  Nick Hatley (Morden, MB) led the charge offensively with three hits, while Jared McCorrister (Boissevain, MB) picked up the win on the mound and had six strikeouts in his two innings of work. 

British Columbia1 24  Regina (SK2) 3

Team BC came ready to play, hammering Regina via the mercy rule.  Eleven different players scored at least one run, including four from Liam Vulcano (Surrey, BC).  Jackson Hogg (Surrey, BC) was also outstanding at the plate with four hits, three RBI and three runs scored. 

Spruce Grove 7  Saskatoon (SK1) 5

Saskatoon looked to make a miracle comeback, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as host Spruce Grove picked up their first victory of the tournament.  Dirk Eymundson (Carvel, AB) was solid on the mound, striking out ten over five innings to pick up the win.  Brendan Logan (Oyen, AB) and Colbey Klepper (Stony Plain, AB) had two RBI each while Saskatoon’s Reid Glover had four hits and two RBI of his own. 

 

Senior Men

Alberta (1) 3  Nova Scotia 2

Thomas Muhlethaler (Sherwood Park, AB) put his team ahead with a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning, and his team held on to defeat Nova Scotia.  On defense, Jordy Alexander (Calgary, AB) was a rock on the mound, throwing a complete game with zero walks and five strikeouts.  Cory Christie (Sydney, NS) had two RBI in the loss. 

British Columbia 5  New Brunswick (1) 4

One inning of offense was all both teams needed, but BC scored that one extra run to prevail over New Brunswick.  Brad Ferraro’s (Abbotsford, BC) RBI ground out proved to be the difference maker in his team’s five run third inning.  Jody Peterson (Fredericton, NB) drove in two runs in his team’s four run fifth inning.

Ontario 7  New Brunswick (2) 4

Ontario’s bats came out swinging early to the tune of four first innings runs to pull away from New Brunswick and towards a victory.  Sean Bignall (Brampton, ON) and Matt DeKundy (Mississauga, ON) both drove in two runs while Kris Keating (Miramichi, NB) also drove in two runs for his team in a losing cause. 

Windsor 5  Alberta (2) 4

The hosts from Windsor capped of a great day of baseball by winning a nine-inning thriller.  With the game tied at two, Matt Cook (Dresden, ON) scored the first of three runs, and as it turned out they needed all three.  Looking at trouble and with two runs already scored in the bottom of the ninth, Adam Myers (Toronto, ON) came in to close the game out and preserve the win.
