Juniors come up short against Braves

ORLANDO-The Atlanta Braves scored the go-ahead run off a Junior National Team error in the bottom of the seventh and held on for a 4-3 victory as extended spring training continued at ESPN Wide World of Sports.

With the score deadlocked at three in the bottom of the seventh, the second batter of the inning hit a one-out double and advanced to third base on a ground out before an error allowed him to score.

The juniors had opened the scoring in the top of the second when Daniel Pinero (Toronto, ON) tripled with one out. After Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) was hit by a pitch the juniors executed a double steal that saw Pinero score the game’s first run and Morgan safe at second base.

Later in the inning Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) picked up a two-out, RBI double that saw Morgan score from second base and give his club a 2-0 lead.

Starter Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) was solid on the mound tossing three scoreless innings giving up only two singles and a pair of walks.

The Braves finally got to Quantrill in the fourth as he gave up a lead-off single where the runner stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a JNT error.

In total, Quantrill went four innings and gave up a run on three hits and two walks and also struck out three batters.

With neither team scoring in the fifth, the juniors regained their two-run lead with a run in the sixth. Mitchell Triolo (Scarborough, ON) struck out, but reached first base after the third strike got by the catcher. Triolo managed to steal second base and scored off a Kyle Hann (Oakville, ON) single.

Travis Seabrooke (Peterborough, ON) replaced Quantrill with a scoreless fifth, but ran into trouble in the sixth as the Braves tied the score with a two-run frame.

Seabrooke looked to be in good shape recording two quick outs off a ground-out and pop-out, but an error gave the Braves a runner and new life.

Two singles later and the lead was cut to one before Seabrooke threw a wild-pitch to bring in the tying run.

After the Braves took the lead in the seventh, Seabrooke was replaced by Dylan Brooks (Dorchester, ON) in the eighth who tossed two scoreless innings and gave up only a single and a walk, while striking out three batters.

Notes: The juniors will be back in action tomorrow at ESPN Wide World of Sports when they take on the Houston Astros at 1pm ET…It is expected that Jake Marks (Brights Grove, ON) will start on the mound…The Spring Training Camp is an important step in the selection process as 20 players will be chosen in August to represent Canada at the IBAF 18U World Baseball Championship in Seoul, South Korea August 30th- September 8th.
