Juniors fall to Stetson in camp finale

DELAND, FL- Stetson University scored early and often as they defeated the Junior National Team 10-3 to wrap-up the Fall Instructional League Camp.

Stetson got to starter Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) in the bottom of the first with a four-run inning and added three more runs in the second to take a commanding lead.

After striking out the first batter he faced in the bottom of the first, Quantrill allowed a single and triple which brought in the first run of the game and after an error scored another run, a two-run single plated two more to make the score 4-0 before the game was an inning old.

The second inning saw Stetson load the bases with nobody out and two consecutive sac-flies brought in two runs along with an RBI single put the home side up by seven.

Nathan Borges (Brooklin, ON) came on in relief for the third inning and managed a strikeout, ground out and fly-out after giving up a lead-off walk to keep Stetson off the scoreboard for the first time in the game.

In the fourth, Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) singled and Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) reached on a fielder’s choice, but both runners were left on base.

The juniors failed to put any runs on the board in the fifth as they left two runners on base again. JD Osborne (Whitby, ON) picked up his first of two singles on the day and Jordan Schulz (Strasbourg, SK) was hit by a pitch.

Borges tossed another scoreless frame in the fifth, but Stetson added to their lead in the sixth on a two-run double and RBI single to go in front 10-0.

Borges finished his three inning outing by giving up three runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out two.

After leaving two more runners on base in the sixth, the juniors broke the shutout bid in the eighth with a two-run inning.

JD Osborne was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning before Malik Collymore (Mississauga, ON) singled to left to give the juniors two on and nobody out.

After a groundout advanced the runners, Osborne scored on an error off a Lachlan Fontaine ground ball and Gareth Morgan followed with an RBI groundout to score Collymore.

Kurtis Horne (Sooke, BC) did a nice job in relief in the seventh as he gave-up a double with one out, but managed two straight ground outs to get out of the inning unscathed.

In the ninth, the juniors scored their third run of the game on an Osborne RBI single to centre that scored Nolan Bumstead (Calgary, AB).

Bumstead had two singles on the afternoon and Jade Salmon-Williams (Brampton, ON) singled as part of seven JNT hits.

Brodie Harkness (Bowmanville, ON) was very effective coming out of the bullpen as he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out two.
