Medal round set at Senior Nationals; Western Peewee’s postponed until Sunday

OTTAWA – Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick and the host team from Prince George will square off Sunday for the right to play in the championship game later that night.  Alberta will play Prince George in the first semi-final at 9:30am MT while Ontario will play New Brunswick at 12:30pm MT.  First pitch of the championship game is scheduled for 7pm MT. 

All Peewee games were postponed due to rain.  Sunday will see the semi-final and championship matches played.  Tournament organizers released the following statement: 

“Saturday, August 25 - ALL GAMES POSTPONED due to rain! Sunday, August 26 10 AM Tie-breaker between the Saskatoon Blue Jays and Saskatoon Cardinals will be played on Zeman Field. We will also schedule the 4th VS 4th Placement game between Bonivital and Winnipeg South for the same time of 10 AM on either Volunteer or Bryant Field. At 1 PM the following games will be played: Semi-Final #1 on Zeman, Semi-Final #2 on Bryant and 3rd VS 3rd on Volunteer. The Bronze and Gold Medal Games will then be played at 5 PM on Bryant and Zeman.”

 

Senior Nationals

BC 6  New Brunswick 3

BC got out to a six run lead that proved to be too much for New Brunswick to overcome.  They made a valiant attempt, but could only come up with three runs.  BC got RBI’s from four different players, including a pair of solo home runs from Jason Cook (Prince George, BC) and Sean Murphy (Victoria, BC).  David Barr (Fredericton, NB) showed some of his power in the game with a home run of his own. 

Manitoba 5  Ontario (2) 4

Manitoba won in style with an extra innings walk-off home run from Ryan Boguski (Brandon, MB).  Down to their final out of the inning, Boguski hit a 2-2 pitch over the fence to cap off the dramatic win.  He also finished the game by driving in four of Manitoba’s five runs.  Jordan Townshend (London, ON) took the tough loss, pitching all seven and two-thirds innings. 

Prince George 10  Nova Scotia 0

Prince George scored at least one run in every inning to cruise past Nova Scotia 10-0 in a mercy-shortened game.  Brandon Hunter (Prince George, C) put on a show with four hits and also racked up three RBI and two runs scored.  Leon Boyd (Abbottsford, BC) was efficient on the mound in five innings of work, striking out six and walking none. 

Ontario (1) 15 Alberta 5

Ontario made sure to put the game away as they scored eight runs over the last two innings to come away with the mercy win in five innings.  Kevin Mailloux (Tecumseh, ON) and Thomas Grubb (Wheatley, ON) had three RBI each while each Ontario player scored at least one run, including four from leadoff hitter Kris Klassen (Leamington, ON).  Byron Whitford (Red Deer, AB) had two hits in the loss. 

Alberta 7  BC 2

Alberta got on the board early and then added to their lead as the game carried on to defeat BC by five runs.  Dan Chappel (Edmonton, AB) was an offensive leader on the day for his team going 2/2 with two RBI and two runs scored.  James Fischer (Sherwood Park, AB) was great on the mound throwing all seven innings and walking none. 

Ontario 8  Manitoba 3

Already winning 5-3, Ontario increased their lead to 8-3 with a three run sixth inning to pull away from Manitoba and earn the victory.  Kris Klassen (Leamington, ON) did his part in the game driving in three runs with a fourth inning home run, while Kevin Mailloux (Tecumseh, ON) scored three times over the course of the of the seven inning affair.  Steve Teno (Lasalle, ON) pitched a complete game to earn the win.
