National Championships: Day two recaps

OTTAWA-Another busy day of National Championships is in the books with standings and the playoff picture taking shape heading into Saturday’s action.

Here’s a look at the late game played today.

13U

Ontario 8 Québec (2) 7

Fans in attendance for the Ontario-Québec matchup were treated to some extra inning baseball at Stronach Stadium, and the players did not disappoint putting on a great show. With the score tied 5-5, Quebec came out hungry scoring two runs in the top half of the eighth inning. Lucas Ramelli (Hamilton) and Kieran Gagnon (Orangeville) led the inning with two singles, followed up by a double from Joshua Palmer (Waterdown) that would score Ramelli. Ontario didn’t look back from the early inning rally, adding two more runs for the 8-7 win.

British Columbia 11 Atlantic 3

Dayton Peters (Abbotsford) and Ryan Blights (Coquitlam) combined for four hits and 7 RBIs to lead British Columbia to their second win of the tournament. Cameron Brown (Cole Harbour) also had a good day at the plate for the loosing team with a couple of hits, while Jackson Haight (Truro) registered two RBIs for Atlantic.

London 13 Alberta 2

For the third time in as many games, London registered 10 or more runs to increase their record to 3-0. Right fielder Noah Roberts (Cambridge) led the offense with three hits and RBIs, while Nathan White also put three balls in play including a double. Pitchers Keegan Pulford-Thorpe (Newmarket) Josh Hudvagner (Cottam) and John Wojcik (London) limited Alberta to only three hits.

Quebec 12 Saskatchewan 5

Quebec scored 7 runs in the fifth inning to comeback from a 4-2 deficit. Lionel Robitaille (Quebec) and pitcher Olivier Pilotte (Quebec) both registered RBI singles, while Antony Gilbert (Quebec) hit a Home Run to put the game out of reach for Saskatchewan. On the mound, Olivier Pilotte (Quebec) and Deven Lacerte-Desmarais (Mauricie) gave up 6 hits while striking out a combined 8 batters.

Saskatchewan 12 Nova Scotia 4

Down by a run after three innings, Saskatchewan responded with nine unanswered as they defeated Nova Scotia 12-4. As he has done all tournament, Jaden Shewchuk (Saskatoon) led the way at the plate driving in three runs on a double and single, while Evan Thomas (Saskatoon) had three hits, scored a run and had one RBI. Jordan Frey (Saskatoon) tossed four innings of scoreless relief for Saskatchewan. Joey Hagen (Dartmouth) and Peter Driscoll (Fall River) had two hits apiece for Nova Scotia.

PEI 10 Newfoundland & Labrador 3

Dawson McCormack (Richmond) went the distance pitching a complete-game with six strikeouts to lead PEI to a 10-3 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. McCormack did not allow an earned run and scattered four hits and two walks, while Kallum Muirhead (Charlottetown) drove in three runs. Chandler Laporte (Cornwall) had two hits including a double, scored two runs and had one RBI.

Vaughan 10 Alberta 6

Dondrae Bremner (Toronto) did it in the batters box and on the mound for Vaughan as they defeated Alberta 10-6 to remain unbeaten. Bremner had two hits including a double and drove in one run, while he pitched three and third solid innings on the mound and struck out three. Bremner wasn’t the only player to impact the game at the plate and on the mound as Vaughn Lucyk (Burlington) got the win pitching three innings and also tripled and had one RBI. Ryan Kula (Toronto) had two triples and two RBI, while Alberta’s Nick Allen (Spruce Grove) had two hits and drove in a run.

Manitoba 4 New Brunswick 3

Manitoba scored four runs in the top of the seventh thanks to two-run singles from Ryan McCorrister (Winnipeg) and Ryan Arcand (Winnipeg) to come from behind and beat New Brunswick 4-3. New Brunswick received a three-hit performance from Peyton Hoyt (Fredericton) who doubled and drove in a run. Justin Laxdal (Winnipeg) was credited with the win, while Trey Fortin (Winnipeg) earned the save.

16U Girls Invitational

Manitoba 26 British Columbia 12

British Columbia looked really good in the early going, putting up 7 runs in the bottom of the first inning. That might have been the wakeup call Manitoba needed, as they scored 25 runs from that point on, while limiting British Columbia to only 5. Every single hitter registered at least one RBI for Manitoba, and leading the way was catcher Jade Ledochowski (Teulon) with 4 hits and 4 RBIs.

Quebec 13 Alberta 8

Pascale Jalbert (St-Honore), Noemie Cote (Jonquière), and Maria Fatima Robles-Riva were all key factors in the win, helping Quebec improve to a 2-0 record by putting up 2 RBIs each. Note that for team Alberta, Saige Hall (Strathmore) had three hits including a double.

Quebec (2) 19 Saskatchewan 3

Quebec took an early 5 run lead and never looked back, bouncing back from a tough lost the previous night to team Ontario. Quebec took advantage of some shaky defense from team Saskatchewan, adding to their lead with 5 runs in the second, one in the third, and eight in the fourth en route to a 19-3 victory. 

Senior Men

Alberta 7 Saskatchewan 2

Davin Gulbrnansen (Red Deer) was solid over seven innings on the mound for Alberta and Kerry Boon (Red Deer) drove in four runs as they went on to defeat Saskatchewan 7-2. Boon had a single and double, and Aaron Dunsmore (Spruce Grove) had three singles and scored a run.

Ontario (2) 14 Newfoundland & Labrador 2

Sean Bignall (Mississauga) belted two homers including a grand slam and had seven RBI to lead Ontario (2) to a convincing 14-2 win over Newfoundland and Labrador. Both Jerome Smith (Mississauga) and Jamie Smith (Mississauga) had three hit games, while James Byrnes (Mississauga) picked up the win on the mound.

Ontario 2 St. John’s 0

Curtis Lambkin (Lakeshore) led off the game with a solo homer and left the rest up to Ontario starter Kyle Breitner (Brampton) who proceeded to pitch seven shutout innings as they blanked St. John’s 2-0. Both Ontario runs were scored in the first inning as Barry Keith (Windsor) later came up with a sacrifice fly. Breitner allowed only three hits, walked five and struck out six, while Bobby Kent (St. John’s) took the loss in a complete-game effort.

Manitoba 7 BC 3

Both Matt Gunning (Virden) and Mitch Olsen (Deloraine) homered and Greg Hockin (Neepawa) struck out nine over seven innings as Manitoba defeated BC 7-3. Gunning also doubled and drove in three runs to pace the Manitoba offence as they erased a two-run BC lead with four runs in the fifth. Robert Foerster (Aldergrove) had two hits including a double and scored two runs for BC.
