HOW IT HAPPENED

-JD Williams (Brampton, ON) kept his hot bat going drilling a double off the fence in left-centre that scored Miles Gordon (Oakville, ON) in the top of the first. Gordon had led off with a walk and stole second base to move into scoring position.

-The Cubs answered back in the bottom of the inning using a leadoff single that advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a sac bunt before scoring on a single up the middle.

-The juniors exploded for five runs in the third highlighted by back-to-back home runs from Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) and Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) – both hitting their second long ball of the week. Prior to Naylor’s blast, JD Williams was at it again singling up the middle with two out to score Darren Shred (Brampton, ON) and Miles Gordon. Naylor then stepped to the plate and drilled a fastball over the fence in right before Orimoloye came to the plate and sent a ball over the fence in left.

-The Cubs used a single to left and double to left to score a run in the seventh off of reliever Mathieu Deneault-Gauthier (Candiac, QC). The juniors got the run back in a similar fashion in the eighth when Andrew Yerzy (Toronto, ON) singled to right with two out and scored from first when Tristan Pompey (Milton, ON) doubled off the wall in left field.

-The Cubs added a pair of run in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap to three but Deneault-Gauthier recorded the final two outs by strikeout to preserve the win.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-After giving up two singles and one run in the first, JNT starter Will McAffer (North Vancouver, BC) settled in nicely retiring eight hitters in a row that included two strikeouts.

-Reliever Michael Brettell (Fonthill, ON) worked three scoreless innings and made his way out of some trouble getting a pair of groundouts after two walks in the fourth before escaping with no damage done after allowing two singles to open the fifth.

-With a runner on third and one out in the seventh, reliever Mathieu Deneault-Gauthier uncorked a wild pitch and the runner broke for home. Catcher Andrew Yerzy hustled to ball and slid to grab it before throwing a strike to Deneault-Gauthier covering home who applied the tag to get the sliding runner.

-Deneault-Gauthier showed his swing and miss stuff during his three inning outing recording six strikeouts including the final two batters of the game.

-The juniors now move to three wins and one loss on the Dominican Summer League tour with nine games still remaining.

THEY SAID IT

Head Coach Greg Hamilton on his team’s performance:

“I thought we played a complete game offensively, defensively and pitching-wise. I’m pleased. (The Cubs) were a pretty good team – they had some guys who could swing the bat, they could run and had some decent pitching.”

Hamilton on the performances on his three pitchers today:

“For the most part we threw strikes. We had a little hiccup in an inning or two but overall threw strikes and made (the Cubs) swing the bats. Overall I thought our arms were solid. If we can (pitch) like that consistently, we’ll have a pretty good chance (to win) against most teams at this level.”

Hamilton on his team’s batting lineup that has produced 37 runs through four games in the Dominican:

“I think we’ve got pretty good balance up and down our order with a lot of players that can hurt you. If we get pitching, I think with our lineup, we can play with anybody.”
