Next stop, Cuba for Girls Development Camp

OTTAWA- It’s that time of year again where 24 lucky female baseball players will pack their bags and head to Cuba for the annual Girls Baseball Development Camp.

The camp, set for February 19-26, will feature daily games and practices along with cultural experiences leaving the athletes with more than just a unique baseball trip.

“We’ve done this camp for eight years and the interest level continues to grow,” says Women’s National Team Manager André Lachance who has attended each of the eight years. “As far as baseball goes, the athletes will be challenged in an environment that is completely foreign to them.

“They’ll also have the opportunity to experience the Cuban culture and make new friends with girls from across Canada. It’s really an amazing experience for a young person when you break it all down.”

Tess Forman has attended the Girls Development Camp in the past and is looking forward to the opportunity to see some familiar faces while getting a top-notch baseball experience in the middle of winter.

“This trip means a lot to me as it's an opportunity to reconnect with many of the friends I've made over my years playing baseball,” she said. “On the field, it's a great baseball experience, playing on a team with girls from all over Canada against great Cuban players.

“It's also great to split up the winter and play some games. Off the field, you make tons of new friends and have a great time together.”

Hailey Coumont will be attending the Girls Development Camp for the first time and plans to use the camp to improve her skills while learning from some of the top coaches in the country.

“I am excited to perform for some of Canada's best coaches, furthering my development and my dreams to one day play for team Canada,” she said. “I am a little nervous about the trip because I know this is such an amazing opportunity to play the best I can for the coaches of the team of my dreams, but I am much more excited than nervous.”

Lachance will be joined on the coaching staff by former big leaguer and current WNT pitching coach Aaron Myette along with current WNT MVP Amanda Asay. Sylvain Saindon and Mike Goyette will round out the staff.

“We’re fortunate to have these coaches attend the camp this year as they each bring a unique skill-set and background that will benefit all of the athletes,” added Lachance. “Our goal as staff is for each girl to be a better baseball player when they leave the camp.”

In the past, guest coaches have included former Cuban National baseball stars that offer another unique perspective of the game with their knowledge and passion for baseball.
