Paxton makes MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects List

OTTAWA-James Paxton (Delta, BC) has cracked MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list. Paxton, a member of the Seattle Mariners organization, comes in at #77 on the list after an impressive 2011 season at two separate minor league stops.

Originally selected in the first round of the 2009 draft by the Toronto Blue Jays out of the University of Kentucky, Paxton was unable to come to terms with the Blue Jays and re-entered the draft in 2010. The Seattle Mariners used a fourth round selection to take the left-handed pitcher and signed him prior to the 2011 season.

Making his debut at Low-A Clinton in the Midwest League, Paxton fanned 80 batters in only 56 innings pitched, while carrying a 2.37 ERA through 10 starts. He later made the jump to Double-A and was dominant in seven starts going 3-0 with 51 strikeouts in 39 innings pitched and registering a minuscule 1.85 ERA.

According to the scouting report on MLB.com, Paxton is predicted to make his MLB debut sometime in 2012 and profiles as a solid #2-3 starter in the big-leagues. The report also notes that he has a plus fastball and curve in his arsenal, while also displaying an improved changeup.

Paxton is a two-time Junior National Team alumnus and played for the 2006 club that captured bronze at the IBAF World Junior Championship in Cuba.
