Peewee Atlantic Championships: Day 1 concludes in St. John’s

OTTAWA – The Peewee Atlantic Championships kicked off its first day with four games.  The four games today along with Friday’s schedule are all round-robin games that will determine the standings heading in to Saturday’s placement games and semi-final matchups.

Here is a recap of today’s games:

PEI – Summerside 7   Newfoundland – Grand Falls-Windsor 1

PEI got on the board early with two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back to defeat Newfoundland by a final score of 7-1.  Logan MacDougall (Summerside, PE) had quite the day for his team as he reached base in all four of his plate appearances while scoring and driving in two runs apiece.  Brandon Condon (Kensington, PE) picked up the win on the mound pitching five strong innings and striking out seven.

New Brunswick – Fredericton 15  Nova Scotia – Tri County 3

New Brunswick came out swinging in a big way to the tune of 15 runs to roll over Nova Scotia in a mercy-shortened five-inning game.  Adam Estey (Fredericton, NB) scored four of his team’s 15 runs while Zachary Newman (Miramichi, NB) and Jack Ryan (Fredericton, NB) each contributed with four RBI.  Isaac Chapman (Lower Sackville, NS) drove in two runs in his team’s losing effort.

PEI – Charlottetown  10  St.  John’s  0

PEI scored two runs in the first inning and five runs in the sixth inning to seal the ten-run victory over host St. John’s.  Leadoff hitter Elijah Hood (Charlottetown, PE) scored two runs off of two hits and also drove in two runs while Ryan May (Charlottetown, PE) had three RBI in the victory.  Hood also struck out ten over four innings of work to pick  up the victory on the mound.

Nova Scotia – Bridgewater  9  New Brunswick – Moncton  7

Four first inning runs from Nova Scotia helped them catapult to the eventual two-run defeat over New Brunswick.  New Brunswick added five runs in the seventh inning to make the game close, but it wasn’t enough.  Ryan O’Toole (Bridgewater, NS) finished the game a perfect 3/3 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored.  O’Toole also picked up the win on the mound in two innings of work.
