Romak Named MVP, Robinson an All-Star

San Juan, Puerto Rico- Jamie Romak (London, ON) has been named tournament MVP at the Pan Am Games/World Cup qualifier in Puerto Rico. Romak had an outstanding tournament at the plate leading all batters in homeruns (5) and RBI’s (14). Romak was also listed second amongst the tournament leaders in batting average (.448) and first in slugging percentage (1.103). In addition to the MVP award, Romak was also selected to the tournament all-star team as an outfielder.

He had a great tournament,” said Canadian manager Ernie Whitt in an earlier interview. “This was the first time I’ve had a chance to see him play and he definitely has been a welcome addition to the team.”

Chris Robinson (Dorchester, ON) joins Romak on the tournament all-star team at the catcher position. Robinson appeared in five games and carried a .545 batting average which was the highest in the tournament. Robinson saved his best offensive performance of the tournament for Canada’s final game where he went 5-for-6 with a homerun and three RBI’s.

The tournament organizing committee also recognized the top defensive players with Canada’s Pete Orr (Newmarket, ON) getting the nod at second base and Shawn Bowman (Port Moody, BC) taking the honors at third base. Both Orr and Bowman had perfect (1.000%) fielding percentages.

Notes: The final day of competition saw the Bronze Medal game between the United States and Venezuela cancelled due to rain…With the amount of water that hit Puerto Rico, every effort was being made to get the Gold Medal game in between Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
