Senior Women Invitational: Ontario and Québec to meet for gold medal

 

OTTAWA- Ontario will have a chance to defend their gold medal after they defeated Alberta 8-0 to punch their ticket to tomorrow’s championship contest.

For the second time in three years, Ontario’s opponent will be Québec who defeated BC 9-7 in the second semi-final, to remain undefeated for the tournament, and reach the gold medal game.

Semi Final #1

Ontario 8 Alberta 0

Jen Gilroy (Mississauga, ON) hit a sac-fly in the bottom of the first inning for all of the offence Ontario would need and Autumn Mills (Toronto, ON) tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout as Ontario blanked Alberta 8-0 to advance to the gold medal game. Ontario will play in the championship contest for the seventh consecutive year and will look to repeat as champions. Gilroy would add an RBI ground out in the fourth, while Kathryn Kennaley (Burlington, ON) went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs scored and an RBI to pace Ontario’s offence.

Semi Final #2

Québec 9 BC 7

BC gave Québec all the could handle, but in the end Québec hung-on for a 9-7 win, to keep their undefeated record intact and advance to the gold medal game against Ontario. After BC took a 7-6 lead in the top of the 6th, Québec responded with three runs in the bottom half highlighted by a two-run single from Sabrina Beauvais (Montréal, QC) to put the home side in front by two. Gabrielle Demers (Gatineau, QC) came on for the save and closed the game that saw the lead change four different times. After BC took a 2-0 lead in the first, Québec stormed back with six runs in the second and held on until the sixth where they briefly gave-up the lead before going ahead for good in the bottom of the inning. Québec’s Stéphanie Savoie had a double and two RBI, while BC’s Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, BC) went 4-for-4 in a losing cause.

Earlier in the day, round-robin action concluded with two games that saw Ontario beat Québec (2) 11-0 and Alberta defeat BC 5-2 to claim third place in the standings. Nicole Luchanksi (Edmonton, AB) and Megean Cornelssen (Grande-Prairie, AB) each collected RBI doubles and Heidi Northcott (Rocky Mountain House, AB) earned the win in a complete game effort. Paige McDonnell (Surrey, BC) went 3-for-4 for BC.
