Solid pitching leads to victory over Tigers

San Pedro de Macoris, DR-Five Junior National Team pitchers combined to three-hit the Detroit Tigers Dominican prospects as the juniors picked up an 8-2 victory for their second win of the day.

Both teams committed four errors and combined for only eight hits with the juniors holding a 5-3 edge.

After three walks loaded the bases in the top of the second, Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) was hit by a pitch bringing home the game’s first run.

With two out, Johnny Caputo (Toronto, ON) reached on an error which led to another run crossing the plate and Jacob Robson (Windsor, ON) hit a RBI single and it was quickly 3-0.

Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) started on the mound and worked two scoreless innings as he struck out one batter and didn’t allow a walk or a hit. Kellogg hit a batter in the bottom of the second in an otherwise flawless performance.

Kyle Hann (Oakville, ON) kept his hot bat going as he doubled in the third and later scored on a single from Nathan DeSouza (Milton, ON).

With the score now 4-0, Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON) entered the game and after hitting a batter and allowing a walk with two-out in the third, struck out the final batter to leave both runners on base.

In the fourth, the juniors benefitted from two Tiger errors, a walk and hit batter to score three more runs which broke the game wide open. Jacob Robson earned a RBI the hard way as he was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded that brought in a run.

Quantrill gave-up a walk in the fourth, but fanned two batters in a scoreless inning to keep the Tigers hitless through four.

After Michael Clouthier (Guelph, ON) struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers scored their first run of the game in the sixth when Clouthier gave up a walk that advanced to third base on an error and came around to score on a RBI ground out.

The Tigers broke the no-hit bid in the seventh off JNT reliever Jason Tarapasky (Pierrefonds, QC) who allowed a single to centerfield after giving up a walk.

With two runners on and one out, Tarapasky induced a ground out and fly-out to end the inning.

Tarapasky allowed a one-out double in the eighth that came around to score on a JNT throwing error and cut the lead to 7-2.

The juniors got the run back in the top of the ninth as Bryan Saucedo (Toronto, ON) scored when Jamar Burnette’s (Toronto, ON) two-out ground ball was misplayed by the shortstop.

Christian Botnick (Brampton, ON) pitched the ninth and managed one strikeout before getting a force-out at second base to end the game.
