U-18 Pre World Cup: Solo homer gives Aussies walk-off win

A lead off homer in the bottom of the ninth broke a 5-5 tie and gave Australia a 6-5 win as they picked up their third win of the eight-game Australia-Canada U18 Series with five games still to play.

Both teams will use the series to determine their 20 player rosters that will compete in the WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Osaka, Japan from August 28th – September 6th.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Isaac Deveaux (Montréal, QC) drilled a 2-0 fastball over the wall in left-centre with two out in the top of the second to give Canada a 1-0 lead.
-It didn’t take long for Australia to answer back as they pushed across a run in the home half of the second. A one-out single and stolen base, scored on a single to right with two out off of Canadian starter Will McAffer (North Vancouver, BC).
-Canada retook the lead with a pair of runs in the third. Royce Ando (Mississauga, ON) led off the frame with a bunt single that saw him advance to second on the play after a throwing error. With Ando on third and two out, Adam Hall (London, ON) dropped a double into right field and he scored when Kobe Hyland (Spruce Grove, AB) lined a single to right.
-The Canadian offence continued to roll in the fourth as Demi Orimoloye (Orleans, ON) led off the frame with a double to left and scored one batter later on a double down the right field line off the bat of Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, ON).
-Canadian reliever Tyler Whitbread (Camlachie, ON) issued a walk and single to start the bottom of the sixth before he gave up a home run on a 2-1 pitch to centre that pulled the Aussies even. They were not done there as a walk, sac bunt and wild pitch was followed a by a single, that got through the right side with the infielders pulled in, that gave the Aussies a one run advantage.
-Royce Ando led off the seventh inning with a homer that landed over the fence in left field to tie the score.
-With reliever Vincent Beauregard (Laval, QC) on the mound, a 2-2 pitch was hit over the wall in left field to give Australia a walk-off, 6-5 win.

JNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Canadian starter Will McAffer turned in a solid four-inning performance on the mound as he gave up just one run on two hits and two walks, while he struck out six batters.
-Reliever Tyler Whitbread escaped trouble in the seventh as he got a strikeout and fly-out to right to leave the bases loaded.
-Canada received a pair of home runs from Isaac Deveaux and Royce Ando. Both were solo blasts.
