NEW YORK -- Canadian baseball star Joey Votto has made the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The Toronto native, who plays first base for the Cincinnati Reds, is among the candidates for National League MVP this season.

Dressed in his Reds uniform and leaning on a bat, Votto is featured on the SI cover beside the headline:

"Time To Get Mean -- Nice guy (and MVP?) Joey Votto has the Reds set up for a sick September."

Heading into Tuesday's games, Votto was batting a National League best .323 with 29 home runs and 86 RBIs.

Jon Wertheim's cover story on the Canadian examines his stellar season and explores how baseball first caught his attention during the Blue Jays' 1993 World Series.

The issue hits newsstands Wednesday.
