WBC: Canada stymied by Colombia

MIAMI – Three Colombian pitchers combined to limit Canada to just one run and five hits as Canada suffered its second consecutive loss at the World Baseball Classic losing 4-1.

The loss puts Canada in a deep hole needing the Dominican Republic to defeat both the United States (tonight) and Colombia (tomorrow), while getting a big win over the United States tomorrow for any hope of playing in a tie-breaker game tomorrow.

Colombia 4 Canada 1

“We came out real fast, scored a run and then our bats became silent,” said Canadian Manager Ernie Whitt. “When you have five hits and you only score one run, you’re not going to win many ballgames.”

Canada opened the scoring in the first as Freddie Freeman (Fountain Valley, CA) singled off his Atlanta Braves teammate and Colombian starter Julio Teheran to score Justin Morneau (New Westminster, BC).

Teheran was dominant from then on finishing his five-inning outing allowing just the one run on two hits and a walk, while fanning three.

Canadian starter Nick Pivetta (Victoria, BC) turned an impressive outing of his own with the only blemish coming in the third when Colombia tied things up on a Donovan Solano RBI single to left.

Pivetta went four innings on the mound allowing five hits, while striking out one.

“I really commanded my fastball today,” said Pivetta. “I felt like my off-speed wasn't all there, but I was able to get away with my two-seam, and that helped me a lot and kept those guys down to a run, which was good.”

With two out in the fifth and reliever Ryan Kellogg (Whitby, ON) on the mound, a single and stolen base put Tito Polo into scoring position and set the table for Solano who singled to centre to give Colombia the lead.

Colombia would load the bases in the sixth with two out before Éric Gagné (Mascouche, QC) entered the game and walked in a run before getting a fly ball to right to limit the damage.

Gagné came back out for the seventh and eighth innings and kept Colombia off the scoreboard registering a pair of strikeouts and allowing just one hit.

Canada received two out singles from Freddie Freeman and Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) in the ninth but couldn’t cash them in.

Tomorrow’s contest against the United States is set for 7pm ET with the game available on Sportsnet and MLB Network.

RHP Ryan Dempster will get the start for Team Canada against LHP Danny Duffy for Team USA.
