WNT selection camp closes with doubleheader sweep

TORONTO- Selection camp for 32 players hoping to land a spot on the 18 player Women’s National Team that will represent Canada at the Pan Am Games concluded today at Rogers Centre with wins over the Scarborough Midgets and the East York Bantams.

The final roster will be announced tomorrow at Rogers Centre, while the team plays an exhibition game against the Martingrove Midgets.

In the morning contest, Canada Red earned a 6-2 win over Scarborough behind some solid pitching and an 11 hit attack that saw four batters record multi-hit games.

Starter Heidi Northcott (Rocky Mountain House, AB) allowed one run on four hits, while getting two strikeouts over three innings and she was backed up by Samantha Ostrom (Calgary, AB) who fired three shutout frames where she scattered three hits and a walk, and struck out five.

Canada Red erased a one run deficit in the fifth scoring three runs on four hits including a run scoring triple off the bat of Niki Boyd (Surrey, BC) and an RBI single from Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB).

After scoring a run in the sixth, Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer, AB) doubled home Luchanski in the eighth putting Canada Red in control.

In the afternoon tilt, Canada Black erased a 1-0 East York lead with two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back cruising to an 8-2 win.

Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) and Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) each collected two hits including a triple that saw two runs score on Hicks’s blast as part of a three-run third. Daphnée Gélinas (Repentigny, QC) also had a two-hit game that included a double to go along with one RBI.

On the mound, Canada Black received two scoreless innings each from Sabrina Périard (Gatineau, QC) and Psota. Each player scattered two hits with Périard fanning two batters, while Psota had one.

Hannah Martensen (Ottawa, ON) and Cindy Saavedra (Toronto, ON) threw two innings each that saw both allow a run on two hits and a walk. Saavedra struck out a game-high four batters, while Martensen sat down two via the strikeout.
