Saunders named to All-World Baseball Classic Team

OTTAWA-Canadian OF Michael Saunders (Victoria, BC) has been named to the Met Life All-World Baseball Classic Team which was announced by WBCI earlier today.

Saunders, a member of the Seattle Mariners, was virtually unstoppable during Canada’s three WBC games in Phoenix as he hit .727 with a home run and 7 RBI en route to capturing Pool D MVP honours.

In Canada’s opening game against Italy, Saunders went 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI before going 4-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBI in a 10-3 Canada win over Mexico.

Saunders also gave Canada an early 2-0 lead against the United States on the final day of Pool D play with a 2-run homer off Team USA’s Derek Holland in the 2nd inning.

With Canada down late in the game, Saunders showed his versatility by dropping down a bunt single to spark a Canadian rally that fell short with him standing on third base as the games tying run.

After Canada was eliminated by the United States, Saunders was presented with the MVP Award by three-time World Series Champion Manager Tony La Russa and former MLB slugger Tony Clark.

Baseball Canada would like to congratulate Michael Saunders on being named to the Met Life All-WBC Team and wish him well for the upcoming season.
