OTTAWA- Junior National Team alums, Tristan Pompey (Mississauga, ON) and RJ Freure (Burlington, ON), were selected on day two of the Major League Baseball Draft as round three through ten were completed.

Pompey, a standout outfielder at the University of Kentucky, was taken in the third round (89thoverall) by the Miami Marlins, while Freure, one of the top relievers at the University of Pittsburgh, went to the Houston Astros in the sixth round, 192ndoverall.

Pompey, 21, hit .335 his junior season with the Wildcats, including seven home runs, 39 RBI and 10 steals in 50 games. His three-year run with the University of Kentucky included a Third-Team Baseball America All-American selection after a blistering sophomore campaign that saw him hit .361 with 10 home runs and 45 RBI.

Freure, 20, was a workhorse out of the Panthers’ bullpen this season amassing 27 appearances for 58.2 innings of work where he held batters to a .227 batting average and struck out an astounding 95.

“It’s an honor to be given this opportunity to play professionally and I would like to thank my coaches for helping me and showing me how to become a better player and person on and off the field,” Freure said in a Pitt Athletics press release. “I’d also like to thank my family and friends for always being there during both the good and bad times. Mostly, I want to thank my parents for everything they have done for me and allowing me to pursue my dream. I am extremely thankful for this opportunity.”

Both Pompey and Freure represented Canada at the 2015 WBSC U-18 Baseball World Cup in Osaka, Japan.

Pompey and Freure join Noah Naylor (Mississauga, ON) who became the first Canadian selected in the 2018 MLB Draft when the Cleveland Indians used their first round selection (29thoverall) to take the Junior National Team product on Monday.
