Women’s Invitational: Ontario picks up two victories on day one

MONTRÉAL- The Women’s Invitational Championships opened today at Gary Carter Stadium that featured all six teams in action.

Defending gold medalists Ontario picked up two wins in convincing fashion, while BC, the 21U Prospects and host Québec also recorded victories.

Round robin action continues on Friday and Saturday before semi-final and medal games take place on Sunday.

Québec 5, Ontario (2) 0

Anne-Sophie Lavallée and Erica Ahad limited Ontario (2) to just two hits, while Isabella Denis and Arianne Levesque both doubled and knocked in a run to lead Québec to a 5-0 win. Elizabeth Plamondon tossed three scoreless innings and had one strikeout in the loss for Ontario (2).

Ontario 14, 21U Prospects 0

A leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth was the only hit that Ontario starter Hannah Martensen allowed as she and her Ontario teammates cruised to a 14-0, mercy rule win over the 21U Prospects. Jenna Flannigan highlighted Ontario’s nine-hit attack with a 2-for-2 game at the plate that included a double and three RBI.

BC 20, Alberta 2

Amanda Asay struck out six over five innings of work and contributed an RBI single as BC pounded out 16 hits to earn a 20-2, mercy rule win over rival Alberta. Claire Eccles paced the BC offence with a 4-for-5 game at the plate that included a triple, while Katie Reyes drove on five BC runs as part of a 2-for-4 day. A 2-1 Alberta lead after two innings was quickly erased as BC struck for five, six and eight runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth frames.

21U Prospects 14, Ontario (2) 1

The 21U Prospects built an eight run lead after three and scored five in the fifth en route to a 14-1 mercy over Ontario 2. Emma March and Mia Valcke had two doubles and two RBI each, while Emilie Laliberte drove in three runs on a bases clearing triple as part of a six-run third inning.

Ontario 13, Québec 3

Ella Matteucci drove in four runs and had a triple to lead Ontario to a 13-3 mercy shortened win over Québec. Ontario out hit Québec 7-5 but took advantage of 14 walks to score 13 runs. Autumn Mills earned the win working four innings that included two strikeouts while Emma Carr fired two scoreless and hitless innings in relief.
