Canadian Juniors Falls to Chinese Taipei in Joplin

Chinese Taipei took the lead early and never relinquished it as they would defeat the Junior National Team by a score of 6-1 in a seven inning ball game in Joplin, Missouri for the USA Exhibition Series. The Junior’s lone run of the ball game came in the fifth inning when Marcus Knecht of Toronto, Ontario drove in Leslie Williams of Scarborough, Ontario which completed the game’s scoring. Chinese Taipei jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and one in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead.  Ming Jen Hsieh led the offence for Taipei going 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Cameron Gray of Toronto, Ontario lasted two innings on the mound, giving up all six runs on eight hits with two walks.  Nick Fogarty followed Gray in relief and pitched four shutout innings, allowing only one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Defensively for the Canadians, Leslie Williams started a triple play with a wonderful diving catch, then throwing over to the first baseman Brett Sanders of Etobicoke, Ontario for the second out, who then threw over to second base to complete the play. The Junior National Team will attempt to get their revenge on Friday as their next game is against the same Chinese Taipei team.  Game time is scheduled for 4 pm in Joplin.

As the evening games were getting underway, the rain began to fall, and fall heavily, which caused organizers to push back games to Saturday here at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City. All four championship divisions were affected as they each had to reschedule at least two games to Saturday.  Some will resume from the point they were suspended while others were completely wiped out and will restart from the beginning. In the games that were completed, Nova Scotia doubled Newfoundland and Labrador 4-2 at the midget championship.  Elsewhere, Manitoba edged Saskatchewan 2-1 and the host team Québec City took the loss against British Columbia by a score of 3-2. Logan Seifrit of Spruce Grove, Alberta threw a complete game with 17 strikeouts, but allowed seven runs on four hits as his Alberta team took the loss against New Brunswick 7-4 at the Pee-Wee championship. In other Pee-Wee action, Saskatchewan beat Nova Scotia 3-1. Prince Edward Island earned a win against Newfoundland and Labrador by a final score of 9-6, Ontario crushed Manitoba 11-0 and British Columbia fell to Québec City 10-9. Brodie MacDonald of Cornwall, P.E.I. dominated Newfoundland and Labrador, throwing a complete game and allowing only one run on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts to earn the win by a 4-1 score in Bantam championship action. Elsewhere, Alberta beat Nova Scotia 12-10.  British Columbia dominated New Brunswick by a score of 11-1 and it was the same story between Québec City and Saskatchewan with the host team taking it, 14-4. In extra innings, Newfoundland and Labrador edged Saskatchewan by a final score of 9-8 in 11 innings in the Junior championship.  Also, Ontario beat New Brunswick 6-0. The rain caused some delays, but the opening matchups to begin week two of the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City were able to get underway. This week will feature the Junior, Midget, Bantam Boys and Pee-Wee Boys play for their respective national titles. The Pee-Wee championship saw some one-sided games to open the week.  Ontario took out New Brunswick by a score of 8-0.  The host team from Québec City crushed Manitoba 13-0 and Newfoundland and Labrador couldn’t keep up with Saskatchewan, falling by a score of 11-2.  One game was a tighter as Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island battled to a 13-11 score with Nova Scotia taking the win. Dan Reid of Nasonworth, N.B. only allowed one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in five innings of work to earn the win for New Brunswick over Québec City, 5-3. Ben Sallows of Moncton, N.B. earned the save, shutting out the Québec City hitters over two innings pitched, allowing no hits while striking out three. Elsewhere, Ontario (Brantford) held off a late charge from Saskatchewan to take the win 12-7 and British Columbia shutout Newfoundland and Labrador by a final score of 6-0. At the Bantam championship, the host team began the tournament with a win, Québec City on top of Manitoba 8-3.  In other Bantam action, New Brunswick took the loss against Ontario by a 3-1 score.  Alberta earned their first win by beating Prince Edward Island 6-2 and Newfoundland and Labrador edged Nova Scotia, 3-2. Jonathan Slattery of Mississauga, Ontario was 3-for-4 with two runs socred and seven RBI, including a grand slam to help lead Ontario to a 13-2 win over Newfoundland and Labrador in five innings at the Midget championship. In other action, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia battled tooth and nail, with Ndew Brunswick taking it, edging Nova Scotia 7-6 and Québec City beat Manitoba by a score of 7-3. In the seventh inning of the gold medal game of the Baseball Canada Cup championship, heavy rain started to fall and suspended the game between British Columbia and Québec.  The game will resume at 9 am Monday. British Columbia leads in the top of the seventh inning 5-0 with a runner on first and nobody out.  In the bronze medal game, Ontario beat Saskatchewan by a score of 9-2 to capture third place. Champions were crowned however in all the other divisions at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City. The host team Québec City won the gold medal in the Senior Men’s championship over Manitoba by a score of 5-1.  British Columbia would take the bronze, beating Ontario (Oshawa) 7-3. Québec was victorious in both the Pee-Wee Girls and Bantam Girls as the Pee-Wee Québec girls came back from a 11-6 deficit to win 15-11 over British Columbia.  Bantam Québec Girls took out Alberta by a score of 11-3.  Québec City captured the bronze in both of these divisions. At the Senior Women’s championship, Ontario took home the gold medal over Alberta  with a 6-2 win and Québec won the bronze with a convincing win over Nova Scotia. All of the medals were presented at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City with the exception of one, the gold medal of the Baseball Canada Cup which was awarded on Monday morning. The game was suspended on Sunday night due to rain in the top of the seventh inning in the gold medal matchup between British Columbia and Québec with a runner on first base and no outs and a 5-0 lead for B.C. British Columbia added a run in the top of seventh as Andrew Young of Crofton, B.C. came in to score to make it 6-0. Québec was unable to create any offense in the bottom half of the seventh inning against Paul Barton of Qualicum Beach, B.C., who only allowed a walk with two strikeouts as British Columbia captured the Baseball Canada Cup championship. Before the game was suspended on Sunday, British Columbia’s starting pitcher, Stosh Wawrzasek of Langley, B.C. was completely dominant over the Québec hitters.  Over six innings pitched, Wawrzasek only allowed three hits and three walks with 15 strikeouts and was awarded the championship’s Top Pitcher Award. The Baseball Canada National Championships will continue on August 16 with the Pee-Wee Boys, Bantam Boys, Midget and Junior championships. All the seeding in all the divisions here at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City are now set after day four action. Ontario and Saskatchewan finished first and second respectively in Pool A of the Baseball Canada Cup championship, earning them automatic byes to the semi-finals on Sunday. In quarter-final action, Québec thumped Nova Scotia, who finished first in Pool B, 11-0 to move on and face Ontario, while British Columbia defeated New Brunswick, who finished second in Pool B, 8-2 and they will now face Saskatchewan. In the Senior Men’s championship, the host team Québec City will take on Ontario (Oshawa) in the first semi-final while Manitoba will face off against either British Columbia or Newfoundland and Labrador in the other semi-final on Sunday. Nova Scotia, Ontario, Alberta and Québec all moved on to the semi-finals in the Senior Women`s championship.  Nova Scotia will take on Ontario and Alberta will battle with Québec. In the games that will determine who plays for the medals in the Pee-Wee Girls championship, Alberta will face off with Québec, while Québec City will take on British Columbia. For the Bantam Girls championship, Québec City is set to tangle with Saskatchewan for the bronze and Québec will wrestle with Alberta for the gold. All five divisions competing in the first week of the Baseball Canada National Championships have now determined who will play for the medals. In the semi-finals of the Baseball Canada Cup championship, Québec, carried on the performances of pitchers Samuel Ouellet of St.-Eustache, Québec and Philippe Charpentier of Lachenaie, Québec, moved on to the gold medal game with a 1-0 victory. In the other semi-final, Danny Britton-Foster held the Saskatchewan hitters at bay as British Columbia moved on to the gold medal game with a 2-0 win.  Britton-Foster pitched a complete game two-hitter, giving up only a walk with 10 strikeouts. At the Senior Women’s championship, Ontario and Alberta will face off for the gold medal after both teams came up with victories over Nova Scotia and Québec respectively.  Nova Scotia and Québec will play for bronze. Québec City, with a 2-1 win over Ontario (Oshawa) in 14 innings, will play for gold in the Men`s Senior championship against Manitoba who defeated British Columbia by a score of 4-2. The Bantam Girls championship will see Alberta and Québec battle for the gold medal and the host team Québec City will take on Saskatchewan for the bronze. Finally, British Columbia and Québec will face off for gold in the Pee-Wee Girls championship.  Québec City and Alberta will challenge for the bronze medal. Junior National Team Roster Announced for Summer Schedule

Baseball Canada has announced its roster for the Junior National Team who will be heading off to Joplin, Missouri for an exhibition series against, among others, the U.S. Junior National Team before making their way for the World Junior Baseball Championship Qualifier set to begin on August 24 in Ixtapa, Mexico. Among the 25 players already named to the roster is Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C.  The 17-year-old prospect recently participated in the Cape Cod Classic, an all-star type game showcasing the best high school baseball players in North America. Their will be a couple of additions to the lineup before the team heads south.  The coaching staff will add players who are participating in the Baseball Canada Cup, which is taking place in Québec City. The Junior team will play six games during their visit to Joplin against Team U.S.A., Team Taiwan and the Premier Team. The trips to Joplin and Mexico are preparation for the World Junior Baseball Championships which will be held in Edmonton next year. Ontario (Oshawa) and Québec faced off for 13 innings at the Baseball Canada National Championship with Ontario eventually coming out on top by a score of 4-3 at the Senior Men’s championship. The game that lasted over three hours and 30 minutes showed the teams tied at 1-1 after seven innings.  Québec took the lead in the top half of the 13th inning as Renaud Desjardins of Québec City, Québec and Vincent Michaud of Rivière-du-Loup, Québec came around to score to put Québec ahead 3-1.  Ontario would come right back in the bottom half of the 13th after making the score 3-2, Adam Sylvestre of Whitby, Ontario hit a double to drive in the tying and winning runs. In other Senior Men’s action, Québec fell a second time as Newfoundland and Labrador were in complete control, taking the victory 8-2.  Alberta fell to Manitoba 4-3 and British Columbia edged New Brunswick 3-2. At the Baseball Canada Cup championship, Ontario improved to 5-0 with a win over Québec, 4-2, who now fall to 0-5.  Nova Scotia beat up on Alberta by a score of 8-1, Newfoundland and Labrador fell to Prince Edward Island 4-1 and Saskatchewan improved to 3-2 with a 1-0 win over British Columbia. Newfoundland and Labrador were crushed again in the Pee-Wee Girls championship, this time by British Columbia by a score of 20-2, while Ontario doubled up on Québec, 12-6. Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Québec were all victorious in Bantam Girls championship action with both Alberta and Québec winning convincingly.  Alberta throttled Nova Scotia 19-0 and Québec pounded Manitoba 13-1. For the Senior Women’s championship, Ontario with a convincing win over Nova Scotia 12-1 and Québec blanked New Brunswick 7-0. After Nova Scotia’s Shain Beaudreau pitched a no-hitter on Wednesday against Manitoba at the Baseball Canada National Championships, Kate Psota of Burlington, Ontario nearly followed in his footsteps on Thursday. In the Senior Women’s Championship, Psota tossed a complete game, one-hitter to lead team Ontario over team Alberta 2-0.  Psota allowed three walks and struck out eight for the victory.  For Alberta, Melissa Armstrong of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts to take the loss. In other Senior Women’s action, Nova Scotia topped New Brunswick 4-1, but were later crushed by Québec 18-1.  In the Pee-Wee Girls championship, Québec City thumped Newfoundland and Labrador 13-0 and Alberta took the loss against Québec by the score of 11-9 For the Bantam Girls championships, Alberta, Saskatchewan and both Québec teams were all victorious.  Quebec City’s win over British Columbia was an amazing comeback as they would come from 11-4 down to take the win 12-11. Nova Scotia, behind their three hits and two home runs, earned the win over British Columbia and their seven hits by a score of 3-2 in Senior Men’s championship action.  In other Senior Men’s action, Québec City improved to 2-0 with a win over New Brunswick 6-2 and Albert fell to 0-2 with a loss to Québec by a score of 6-2. At the Baseball Canada Cup, Prince Edward Island mustered two wins on Thursday, the first an upset win against Alberta 4-2 then downing Nova Scotia 5-2.  Nova Scotia however came back later in the day to beat Newfoundland and Labrador 7-4.  Alberta were able to do the same as they would take out Manitoba later in the day by a score of 7-1.  New Brunswick, Ontario and British Columbia also earned victories.
