13U National Atlantic: Competition resumes after rain delays on Friday

OTTAWA – Some of Atlantic Canada’s most talented young baseball players took the field in Yarmouth, NS on Friday and Saturday for Baseball Canada’s 13U National Atlantic Championship. The two first match-ups of the tournament were played on Friday, but the rest of the day’s competition was postponed until Saturday due to rain.

Six games into the tournament, here’s how the competition stacks up. Dartmouth sits atop Pool B with a 2-0 record while Mount Pearl and Yarmouth lead Pool A with 1-0 records.

Here’s a closer look at the action from the first days of competition:

Summerside (PE2) 15 Fredericton (NB1) 6

Adam Arseneau (Wellington, PE) was a big part of Summerside’s offense going 2 for 3 with a double and a home run driving in 3 and coming into score 3 times. His 3-run shot in the bottom of the 6th increased his team’s lead to 8 securing the win. Summerside’s starting pitcher Landon Gallant (Summerside, PE) faced 16 batters over 3.1 innings striking out 4 of them. Gallant allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks in the outing. Max Grant (Fredericton, NB) and Samuel Tingley (Fredericton, NB) hit back to back homers in the top of the 5th to shorten the deficit to 1 run, but failed to complete the comeback. Sam McKinney (Fredericton, NB) was charged with the loss allowing 14 runs on 14 hits while striking out 6 over a complete 6 innings.

Dartmouth (NS1) 8 St. John’s (NL2) 4

St. John’s put up 3 big runs in the top of the 1st to kick off the match-up, but failed to hang on to the lead as Dartmouth put together a 4-run inning in the bottom of the second to take control. Errors proved to be a problem for both teams as they were charged with 4 each while combining for 8 unearned runs in the game. Reliever Ethan McLellan (Hants North, NS) was solid on the mound for Dartmouth striking out 8 over 5 innings of action. McLellan held the opposition to 3 hits while not allowing a single earned run. Benjamin Roode (Dartmouth, NS) and Hunter Canning (Cole Harbour, NS) both went 2 for 3 in the game combining for 5 RBIs and providing Darmouth’s offense with the spark it needed.

Dartmouth (NS1) 5 Summerside (PE2) 0

Timmy Mann (Dartmouth, NS) went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and scored twice to lead Dartmouth’s offence. Starting pitcher Tyler Boudreau (Bedford, NS) tossed a complete 7 inning shutout to earn the win for his team. Boudreau struck out 8 of 25 batters faced and held Summerside to 4 hits. Justin Caron (Summerside, PE) went the distance as well striking out 5 over 6 innings, but was charged with the loss. Caron allowed 5 runs on 11 hits and 1 walk in the outing. After 3 and a half scoreless innings, Dartmouth took the first lead with a 3-run inning in the bottom of the 4th. They went on to add 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th to secure the win.

Fredericton (NB1) 12 St. John’s (NL2) 10

Samuel Tingley’s (Fredericton, NB) bases-clearing triple in the top of the 1st set the tone for Fredericton as they went on to score 9 more runs in the outing to move to a 2-0 record. St. John’s dropped their second straight game and now sport a 0-2 record. Box score to come...

Yarmouth (Host) 6 Charlottetown (PE1) 3

Ryan Semple (Wedgeport, NS) started on the mound for Yarmouth allowing 2 runs on 3 hits over 2.2 innings. Relief pitcher Jacobie Ford (Weymouth, NS) earned the win on the mound for the host team. Ford held the opposition hitless over 2.1 innings allowing 1 run while striking out 2. Jeremy Charles (Yarmouth, NS) saw some action as well tossing 2 shutout innings to seal the deal. Reliever Carter Champion (Kensington, PE) was charged with the loss allowing 3 runs on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2 over 1 inning of relief work. Both teams relied on a collective effort for run production with the 10 hits in the game coming off of 9 different bats.

Miramichi (NB2) Mount Pearl (NL1)

Liam Bavis (Mount Pearl, NL) was instrumental in Mount Pearl’s 10-5 win over Miramichi. Bavis earned the win on the mound allowing 2 runs over 4.2 innings while striking out 8. The starting pitcher was a big part of the offense as well driving in 3 of his team’s run. Daniel Harris (Mount Pearl, NL) provided some offense as well going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs. Harris also saw some action on the hill as a reliever allowing 3 runs on 3 hits to close the game. Miramichi’s starter Logan Walsh (Miramich, NB) lasted an inning on the mound allowing 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 2 before being charged with the loss. Walsh and Zachary Perron (Miramichi, NB) both drove in runs going 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and a triple, but there production wasn’t enough to catch Mount Pearl.

Up Next: A total of 6 round-robin games remain, including 4 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday.
