13U National Atlantic: Saturday comes to a close

OTTAWA – Four more round-robin games were played Saturday afternoon and evening. The standings are just about set for Sunday’s medal round with only two match-ups to settle before semi-finals. Teams spent the day battling hard to give themselves the best possible chance at a medal.

Here’s a closer look at the rest of the action from Saturday:

Dartmouth (NS1) 6 Fredericton (NB1) 3

Relief pitcher Duncan McLaughlin earned the win for Dartmouth after tossing 2 perfect innings. Fredericton took the early lead with a 3-run inning in the top of the 1st thanks to triples off the bats of Sam McKinney (Fredericton, NB), Max Grant (Fredericton, NB) and Samuel Tingley (Fredericton, NB). The lead didn’t hold as Dartmouth took over after putting up 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Ethan McLellan had a hand in the team’s offensive production with an RBI triple in the 6th that served as insurance to help seal the deal.

St. John’s (NL2) 13 Summerside (PE2) 8

Austin Arsenault (Richmond, PE) went 3 for 4 including a double and a home run driving in 3 and scoring twice in the outing, but couldn’t quite lead Summerside to the win. St. John’s starting pitcher Devon Murphy (St. John’s, NL) earned the win holding the opposition to 4 runs over 4.2 innings while striking out 7. St. John’s offensive production was a collective effort with RBIs coming from 6 different players including Camren Cumby (St. John’s, NL), Brett Hudson (Torbay, NL) and Steven Abbott (Portugal Cove, NL) who drove in 2 each. St. John’s increased their lead to 9 with back to back 4-run innings in the 5th and 6th that secured the win for the team.

Mount Pearl (NL1) 17 Charlottetown (PE1) 14

Mount Pearl completed the huge comeback in extra innings after putting up 7 runs in the top of the 7th to erase Charlottetown’s 6 run lead. Dawson O’Toole Didham (Mount Pearl, NL) earned the win for his relief work in the 7th and 8th innings limiting the opposition to 1 run on 1 hit. O’Toole Didham did his part at the plate as well driving in 3 of his team’s runs. Charlottetown’s starter Logan MacNeill (Cardigan, PE) tossed a complete 8 innings striking out 10 and allowing 7 earned runs. Kieran Burke (St. John’s, NL) was instrumental to Mount Pearl’s success going 4 for 6 at the plate with a double, 2 RBIs and 4 runs scored.

Miramichi (NB2) 5 Yarmouth (Host) 4

Brayden Allain (Miramichi, NB) put on a show on the mound and at the plate to lead Miramichi to victory. Allain lasted 5 innings allowing 2 earned runs while striking out a tournament leading 12 batters. The starting pitcher then helped his cause by giving his team the go ahead run in the bottom of the 5th on a home run. Teagan Scott (Barrington, NS) was charged with the loss leaving the game after 1 inning on the mound despite allowing only 1 run on 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 2. Zachery Perron (Miramichi, NB) was a big part of Miramichi’s offensive production as well going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Up Next: Miramichi and Charlottetown will conclude their game that was suspended on Friday due to rain and Yarmouth will take on Mount Pearl in the final round-robin game. Both semi-final games, the bronze medal game and the gold medal game will all be played on Sunday once the standings are set in stone.
