Baseball Canada Championships: Day 1 gets underway

OTTAWA – For the third straight week, Canada’s top talent takes the field throughout the country in the Baseball Canada Championships. Today, there are three events just getting started.

While the 15U Championship in Vaughan, ON had some trouble with rain early on in the day, competition has resumed. Action at the 13U National Championship in Repentigny, QC kicked off at 8:30am ET with a total of seven games scheduled for the day. At the Senior Men Championship in Chatham, NB, the first game of the day got started on schedule at 10am ADT while the host team Chatham is set to take on British Columbia at 8:00pm ADT. Here’s a look at some of the action so far:

13U National Championship

Ontario (ON3) 4 Atlantic (PEI) 1 – Hunter Nurse (St. Thomas, ON) and Jackson Kotecha (Kitchener, ON) combined for 6 hitless innings on the mound to lead Ontario to the win. Ontario was held to only 2 hits in the game including a triple off the bat of Sean McLaurin (London, ON), but still managed to edge out Atlantic.

Québec (QC2) 13 Ontario (ON2) 7 – Xavier Lemieux-Morrissette (Outaouais, QC) went 4 for 4 driving in 3 runs and crossing the plate 3 times himself to lead Québec’s offensive production. Lemieux-Morrissette hit a 2-run home run in the 4th that extended their lead to 8. Jérémie St-Amour (Outaouais, QC) earned the win as a reliever tossing 2.1 shutout innings striking out 2.

Québec (QC1) 15 Ontario (ON1) 1 – Cédric De Granpré (Richelieu-Yamaska, QC) went 2 for 5 with a double and drove in 4 runs in the game helping Québec to the win. Reliever Zachary Lavigne (Longueil, QC) earned the win shutting down Ontario over 2.2 innings allowing only 1 hit.

Ontario (ON2) 14 Lanaudière 9 – Nathan Chin (Markham, ON) and Justin Murray (Markham, ON) both homered in the contest helping Ontario to the win. William Lacroix hit a 3-run home run in the top of the 1st to give the host team an early lead, but it wouldn’t last as Ontario took over with a 4-run inning in the 4th.

Senior Men Championship

Nova Scotia 7 Newfoundland 0 – The towering left-hander Cameron Marling (Halifax, NS) tossed 6 shutout innings to earn the win for Nova Scotia. Marling allowed only 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. Jordan Sheperd (North Sydney, NS) went 2 for 3 with an RBI-double to provide some offense for his team in the win.

New Brunswick 3 Manitoba 0 – Brody McDonald (Clyde River, PE) earned the win shutting out Manitoba over 6 innings on the mound. Dillion Doucette’s (Peakes, PE) 3rd inning RBI-double proved to be the difference in the game as it gave his team their first lead that ended up lasting the game.

Québec 1 Ontario 0 – François Lafrenière (St-Jean, QC) was outstanding in Québec’s win over Ontario striking out 11 of 25 batters over a full 7 innings. Lafrenière allowed only 2 hits and 3 walks while shutting out Ontario’s offense. Ontario’s starter Rob Nixon’s (North York, ON) performance was just as impressive striking out 8 and allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks. The only run scored in the pitcher’s duel was unearned.

Alberta 4 Newfoundland 0 – Dustin Northcott (Edmonton, AB) tossed a complete shutout game for Alberta to earn the win. Northcott allowed only 3 hits and 1 walk in the contest while striking out 8. Kerry Boon (Red Deer, AB) went 2 for 3 with a double and scored twice.
