Baseball Canada Championships: Competition wraps up Friday

OTTAWA – With Friday’s games having come to a conclusion, teams are left with Saturday’s action to try and give themselves the best opportunity heading into the medal round. Action resumed at the Senior Men Championship despite same rain delays throughout the day while the 13U National Championship and 15U Championship remained right on schedule.

Ontario 3 and Québec 1 lead Pool A at the 13U National Championship in Repentigny, QC both with a perfect 3-0 record. British Columbia sits atop Pool B also with a 3-0 record while the host team Lanaudière trails them with 2 wins and a loss.

At the 15U Championship in Vaughan, ON, Québec leads Pool A with a 3-0 record followed by Ontario who sports a 2-0 record. Pool B is led by Manitoba who is undefeated in their 4 games of the tournament followed by PEI who is 3-1.

British Columbia leads Pool A at the Senior Men Championship in Chatham, NB with a 2-0 record. They are trailed by host team Chatham who is 2-1 so far. New Brunswick and Québec share the lead in Pool B both with 2-0 records.

Here’s a look at the rest of the action on Friday:

13U National Championship

Québec (QC1) 10 Atlantic (PEI) 8 – Cédric De Granpré (Richelieu-Yamaska, QC) homered at the plate and earned the win on the mound allowing only 2 hits over 2.1 innings. Max Grant (Fredericton, NB) went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs for Atlantic in the loss.

Lanaudière 12 Québec (QC2) 7 – Robin Gervais (Lanaudière, QC) and Nathan Primeau (Laval, QC) drove in 3 runs each to lead the host team’s offensive production. Primeau earned the win as well allowing 4 runs on 4 hits over 5 innings of work.

Ontario (ON3) 3 Ontario (ON1) 2 – Jordan Spring (London, ON) drove in the tying run on an RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd and came around to score on a single off the bat of Jackson Kotecha (Kitchener, ON) to take the lead. Reliever Jordan Spring (London, ON) tossed 2 hitless innings to earn the win.

British Columbia 7 Alberta 2 – Jude Hall (Chilliwack, BC) earned the win for BC allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in the start. Hall struck out 9 over 5.2 innings. Jack Yaremko (Burnaby, BC) drove in 2 runs in the game.

Québec (QC1) 15 Saskatchewan 1 – Mathis Leclaire (Candiac, QC) tossed a complete 5-inning game allowing only 1 hit while striking out 6 to earn the win for Québec. Mathis Poutre (Richelieu-Yamaska, QC) went 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs while scoring twice in the game.

15U Championship

Nova Scotia 10 Saskatchewan 0 – Starter Garret Peterson (Hammonds Plains, NS) allowed only 3 hits over 5 innings on the mound for Nova Scotia earning the win. Jaden Griffin (Lower Sackville, NS) went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBIs to help the offensive production.

PEI 12 Newfoundland 6 – Eric Anderson (Charlottetown, PE) went 2 for 2 with 4 RBIs in the game helping PEI to victory. Gabriel Penalver (Sherwood, PE) earned the win allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 3 innings on the mound.

Vaughan 11 New Brunswick 5 – Connor Goldsmith (Windsor, ON) carried Vaughan to victory going 2 for 2 at the plate with 3 RBIs while striking out 6 during his 5 innings on the mound. Josh Tardif (Dieppe, NB) went 3 for 3 with a double driving in 2 for New Brunswick.

Manitoba 14 Alberta 3 – Martin Gisiger (Winnipeg, MB) earned the win for Manitoba allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk over 3 innings on the mound striking out 3, Gisiger was impressive at the plate as well going 2 for 3 with an RBI and scoring 4 times in the game.

Senior Men Championship

 Chatham 3 Alberta 0 – Jean-François Neveu (Miramichi, NB) tossed a complete shutout game for Chatham allowing 4 hits and 3 walks over 7 innings on the mound. Patrick Godin (Moncton, NB) went 2 for 2 and came around to score in the close game.

Ontario 5 Manitoba 1 – Kyle Breitner (Brampton, ON) struck out 8 over 6 innings to earn the win allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 5 walks. Mitch Delaney (Lasalle, ON) went 2 for 3 and scored once.

Québec 9 Saskatchewan 3 – Jean-Philippe Pouliot-Lapointe (Ste-Thérèse, QC) and Frédéric Bolduc (Thetford-Mines, QC) both doubled and drove in 2 runs in the win. Francis Michel (Victoriaville, QC) struck out 5 over 5 innings allowing 3 runs in the outing.

Chatham 6 Nova Scotia 5 – Host Chatham won it in extra innings on a squeeze play when Sean Corcoran (Charlottetown, PE) came around to score. Reliever Jacob Beck (Charlottetown, PE) earned the win holding Nova Scotia hitless over the last 2 innings.
