Blue Jays claim Shawn Bowman

TORONTO - The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed 3B Shawn Bowman on waivers from the New York Mets.

Bowman, 25, appeared in 12 spring training games this year for the New York Mets and batted .300 (3-for-10) prior to being designated for assignment on April 5.  The 6-3, 223 lb. native of New Westminster, British Columbia spent the 2009 season with Binghamton of the Eastern League (AA) where he hit .294 with 24 doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBI.

He was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 2002 First Year Player Draft.  Heading into the 2010 season he posted a .253 career minor league average with 53 home runs and 216 RBI in 439 games.

Bowman was a member of Canada's 2009 World Baseball Classic team but did not appear in a game.  He has also represented Canada at the 2002 World Junior Baseball Championship and the 2009 World Cup where he hit .275 with three home runs and 15 RBI en route to a bronze medal and being named on the All-World Team.

the Blue Jays, who now have 40 players on the 40 man roster, have optioned his contract to Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League (AAA).
