Dartmouth takes gold at 13U National Atlantic Championship!

OTTAWA – Baseball Canada’s last National Championship of the season came to a close on Sunday as Dartmouth defeated the host Yarmouth to earn gold. Last year’s National Champions Summerside won bronze with their win over Mount Pearl.

Two round-robin games were concluded to kick off the day’s action followed by both semi-final match-ups. Yarmouth topped Summerside to earn a spot in the final while Dartmouth defeated Mount Pearl in their semi-final contest.

Here’s a closer look at the action on the last day of the tournament:

Charlottetown (PE1) 9 Miramichi (NB2) 4

Starting pitcher Tanner MacLean (Charlottetown, PE) was instrumental in Charlottetown’s win striking out 10 over 6.1 innings while allowing 2 earned runs. MacLean was an important part of the offense as well going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and coming across to score once. Alex Graham (Charlottetown, PE) provided some offense for the team as well also going 2 for 4 and scoring twice. Gehrig Hale (Miramichi, NB) was charged with the loss after allowing 5 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks over 3.2 innings. Reliever Matthew Power (Charlottetown, PE) entered the game in the 7th to strike out the last two batters sealing the deal for Charlottetown.

Yarmouth (Host) 19 Mount Pearl (NL1) 3

Yarmouth’s offense was firing on all cylinders in their big win over Mount Pearl. 8 of 9 players came across to score in the outing. The production was highlighted by Teagan Scott (Barrington, NS) who went 3 for 5 with 3 RBIs and James Sabine (Weymouth, NS) who went 3 for 4 including a home run with 4 RBIs. Starting pitcher Ben Charles (Yarmouth, NS) pitched a complete 5 innings without allowing a single earned run while striking out 8. Mount Pearl put together a 3-run inning in the bottom of the 3rd but couldn’t quite match the opposition. A total of 5 different pitchers shared the mound for Mount Pearl in the loss.

Yarmouth (Host) 5 Summerside (PE2) 2

Yarmouth edged out defending champions Summerside in a close game thanks to a strong performance from starting pitcher Carson Gorman (Upper Rawden, NS). Gorman struck out 6 over 6.1 innings limiting the opposition to 2 runs on 4 hits earning the win. Teagan Scott (Barrington, NS) James Sabine (Weymouth,NS) and Ben Charles (Yarmouth, NS) all picked up 2 hits and drove in a run in the game providing some of Yarmouth’s offense. Summerside’s starter Landon Gallant (Summerside, PE) was charged with the loss after allowing 5 runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings while striking out 5. Reliever Jeremy Charles (Yarmouth, NS) entered in the 7th retiring 2 batters to close the game and secure the host team a spot in the finals.

Dartmouth (NS1) 15 Mount Pearl (NL1) 0

Dartmouth guaranteed themselves a medal with a decisive win over Mount Pearl thanks to a huge 13-run first inning. Benjamin Roode (Dartmouth, NS) was all over the scoresheet driving in 5 of his team’s runs and coming across to score 3 times. Duncan McLaughlin (Dartmouth, NS) had an impressive outing at the plate as well going 3 for 3 including a triple with 2 RBIs. Starting pitcher Ethan McLellan (Hants North, NS) tossed 2 perfect innings while striking out 5 of 6 batters faced to earn the win. Reliever McLaughlin limited Mount Pearl to 1 hit over 2 innings as Kieran Burke (St. John’s, NL) ended the Dartmouth pitching staff’s bid at a perfect game by reaching base safely.

Summerside (PE2) 12 Mount Pearl (NL1) 2

Summerside’s offense was dominant in their bronze medal win over Mount Pearl with 7 different players coming across to score. Justin Caron (Summerside, PE) led the way going 2 for 2 with a home run driving in 3 and scoring 3 times. Duncan Picketts (Kensington, PE) contributed significantly as well going 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Austin Arsenault (Richmond, PE) rounded out the offensive production driving in 3 runs of his own. Starting pitcher Nolan Ryan (Sherwood, PE) earned the win pitching a complete 5-inning game allowing only 1 earned run on 6 hits. Kieran Burke (St. John’s, NL) was charged with the loss for Mount Pearl as 9 runs came across to score over his 2.1 innings on the mound.

Dartmouth (NS1) 13 Yarmouth (Host) 4

Dartmouth really got the bats going in their gold medal victory over Yarmouth. 5 of the team’s 9 players who picked up a hit did it at least twice in the outing. Nathan Boutilier (Cole Harbour, NS) went 3 for 4 including a double with 4 RBIs to lead the offense. Ryan Cross (Cole Harbour, NS) was instrumental as well as he doubled and drove in 3 runs. Benjamin Roode (Dartmouth, NS) had another impressive performance at the plate going 3 for 4 with 2 doubles, driving a run and scoring twice. Ryan Semple (Wedgeport, NS) went 2 for 3 with a triple driving in 2 runs and scoring once in an attempt to spark Yarmouth’s offense, but the host team couldn’t quite match the opposition. Starting pitcher Ethan McLellan (Hants North, NS) earned the win for Dartmouth striking out 4 over 3 innings while allowing 4 runs. Reliever Benjamin Roode was absolutely dominant on the mound striking out 9 batters over 4 innings and limiting Yarmouth to only 1 hit.
