WNT Selection Camp: Exhibition schedule opens with doubleheader split

HOW IT HAPPENED

-North York opened the scoring in the third after a leadoff walk stole second and third and scored on an RBI single. A passed ball and another stolen base put the runner on third that then scored on an RBI single.
-Canada Red got both runs back in the bottom of the inning when Niki Boyd (Surrey, BC) came in to count on a passed ball before Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) drove in Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, ON) from second base on a single to centre.
-In the fourth, North York took the lead for good scoring a run on an RBI triple before they added three runs in the top of the seventh coming on four hits including two doubles.

WNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Bradi Wall collected Canada Red’s only RBI and collected one of her team’s four hits
-On the mound Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) tossed two scoreless innings and recorded three strikeouts.
-Claire Eccles (Surrey, BC) had three strikeouts in two innings of work, while Autumn Mills (London, ON) registered four strikeouts in three innings on the mound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Three singles and a sac-fly in the top of the first led to two runs for the Mets as they jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.
-Canada Black answered back in the bottom half of the inning with Daphnée Gélinas (Repentigny, QC) scoring on a Meagan Cornelssen (Grande-Prairie, AB) single before Stephanie Savoie (La Pocatiére, QC) and Kate Psota scored on a fielder’s choice.
-The Mets got even with a run in the second before taking the lead in the third after a leadoff double scored on a fielder’s choice.
-Canada Black exploded for three runs in the third as Savoie doubled and scored, while Ashley Stephenson drove in a pair. Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) and Marie-France Castillo (Montréal, QC) each collected an RBI with bases loaded walks.
-In the fourth, Emma Carr (Toronto, ON) led off with a walk and moved to third on Jenna Flannigan’s (Cornwall, ON) double before she scored when Gélinas reached on an error.
-The Mets scored two runs in the fifth to make things interesting before Brinley McLaren (Brantford, ON) shut the door with two scoreless innings of relief.

WNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Offensively, Canada Black had six hits with Ashley Stephenson leading the way with a two-for-four performance at the plate. She also drove in two runs.
-McLaren worked a perfect sixth inning before closing out the game in the seventh that included one strikeout

Women’s National Team Selection Camp will move away from Rogers Centre tomorrow as Canada Red and Canada Black will each play a game against Vaughan Bantam AAA at Vaughan Grove Sports Park beginning at 6pm ET…On Sunday, May 17th, the final 18 player roster that will represent Canada at the Pan Am Games in July in Toronto will be announced.
