WNT Selection Camp: Three pitchers combine on shutout

HOW IT HAPPENED

-A scoreless game was broken wide open in the fourth when Canada Black struck for four runs. After an error and a walk, Brittany Hicks (Dundas, ON) came through with an RBI single to score one before Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh, ON) drove in a run on a single up the middle. Both players came around to score on an error and passed ball, respectively.

-After Kate Psota (Burlington, ON) drove in a run on a base hit in the fifth, Jenna Hillman drew a walk in the sixth and later scored on a wild pitch to round out the scoring.

WNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Pitching was the name of the game for Canada Black and they received three solid performances on the mound as Cindy Saavedra (Toronto, ON), Melissa Armstrong (Saskatoon, SK) and Daphnée Gelinas (Repentigny, QC) combined on the shutout.

-Saavedra tossed three innings scattering three hits and a walk to go along with two strikeouts, while Armstrong and Gélinas went two innings each with both allowing two hits, while getting one strikeout.

-Offensively, Canada Black had seven hits with seven different players collecting one each.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Royal York opened the scoring in the top of the first as a leadoff double scored on a fielder’s choice, while a one out single came in to count on a separate fielder’s choice.

-A walk and a pair of Canada Red errors led to another Royal York run in the third before three runs in the home half of the inning tied the score.

-Jessica Bérubé’s sac-fly to centre scored Niki Boyd (Surrey, BC) before Becky Hartley’s (White Rock, BC) double brought in two.

-Royal York responded retook the lead with two runs in the fourth as they took advantage of two walks that both scored on a single.

-Canada Red cut the lead to one with a run in the fifth before Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, AB) singled and scored in the sixth to tie the score.

WNT HIGHLIGHTS

-Claire Eccles (Surrey, BC) was effective through two scoreless innings on the mound. She allowed two hits and a walk, and fanned three batters.

-Hartley’s two-run double in the third was a big one as both Bradi Wall (Swift Current, SK) and Amanda Asay (Prince George, BC) scored to tie the score.
