The Junior National Team jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, but it would not last long as Premier took control the rest of the way and ended up on top with a convincing 12-4 win at the USA Exhibition Series in Joplin, Missouri. Ryan Westmorelanf was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Premier offence. Gregory Holt was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored and Peter Hissey was 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored. As for the Canadians, Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C. went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the offence. Leslie Williams of Scarborough, Ontario was 2-for-2 and Jeff Hunt of Cambridge, Ontario, Michael Crouse of Port Moody, B.C. and Michael Mutcheson of Morden Manitoba each drove in a run. It was not a good day for the Canadian pitchers. Daniel Britton-Foster of Ladysmith, B.C. threw four innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Jake Eliopoulos of Newmarket, Ontario allowed four runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout in only 2/3 of an inning pitched. Leslie Williams threw two and 1/3 innings and allowed tree run on three hits and Greg Densem of Toronto, Ontario allowed two runs on two hits with a walk in one inning of relief. Next up for the Junior National Team is a matchup with Team USA at Joe Becker Stadium on Sunday at 7 pm in Joplin.
The Americans took control of the game early and did not look back as they came out on top by a score of 10-3 over the Junior National Team at the USA Exhibition Series in Joplin, Missouri. The Canadians were not able to get anything going offensively as they were only able to get six hits in the ball game against the Americans. Chad Stang of Surrey, B.C. led the offence going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Evan Grills of Whitby, Ontario took the mound for the Juniors and threw five innings allowing three runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts to take the loss. Nick Fogarty of Thornhill, Ontario came in relief and the US offence continued to drive in runs. The US drove in seven runs off Fogarty, six earned, on 10 hits. Fogarty also gave up a walk and had five strikeouts, all in four innings of work. Other notable Canadians in this game, Jeff Hunt of Cambridge, Ontario was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Michael Crouse of Port Moody, B.C. was also 1-for-3 in the game. The Junior National Team will now face Chinese Taipei on Monday at 5 pm at Joe Becker Stadium. The Canadians are 0-2 against Chinese Taipei in this exhibition series.
The round-robin portion of the Baseball Canada National Championships is now complete in Québec City as all the teams in the medal round will try to leave Québec with some hardware. At the Junior championship, Québec, who finished the round-robin with a 4-0 record, will take on New Brunswick (3-1) in the first semi-final. Earlier in the day, Antoine Bernier of Granby, Québec threw a complete game no-hitter against British Columbia, earning him the win as Québec would take the victory by a score of 2-1. In the other semi-final, Ontario (4-0) and British Columbia (3-1) will face off for the chance to play for the gold medal. Saskatchewan (3-1) will take on Ontario (4-1) in the first semi-final at the Pee-Wee championship. In the second semi-final, Québec (4-0) will take on either British Columbia (4-1) or Québec City (4-1) as those two will battle to see who earns second place in Pool A. At the Bantam championship, the two Québec teams will face off in one semi-final while Alberta (3-1) takes on British Columbia (5-0) in the other semi-final to see who will play for the gold medal. The host team and the provincial representative could face each other in the gold medal game in the Midget championship. Québec City (3-1) plays Ontario (4-0) in the first semi-final and Québec (3-1) takes on British Columbia (3-1) in the second semi-final. The wheels fell off in the eighth inning for the Junior National Team as they allowed three runs to score to give Chinese Taipei the advantage they needed and take a second straight game from the Canadians 6-2 here at the USA Exhibition Series in Joplin, Missouri. Chinese Taipei had three consecutive hits, two singles and a double from Wei-Ting Lin, Chih Yuan Lien and Yu Hsin Chu in the eighth inning with the score tied 2-2 off of Stosh Wawrzasek of Langley, B.C. Wawrzasek threw two innings in relief and allowed four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout to take the loss. Errors were also a major factor for the loss by the Canadians as they would commit five in the game to Chinese Taipei’s one. The Juniors were able to score their runs in the third and fourth innings. Chad Stang of Surrey, B.C. (1-for-3) doubled and came in to score in the third inning off of the single from Michael Mutcheson of Morden, Manitoba, who would finish the game 2-for-3. In the fourth inning with Chinese Taipei leading 2-1, Marcus Knecht of Toronto, Ontario, who had doubled, came in to score on a RBI double from Carter Bell of Courtenay, B.C. to tie the game. Bell finished the game 1-for-3. Nick Bucci of Sarnia, Ontario started the game for the Canadians and was solid in his international debut. Bucci threw four innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit with four walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Kennedy of Calgary, Alberta came in the game in relief and threw three shutout innings, allowing only two hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The next game for the Junior National Team will be at 4 pm at Joe Becker Stadium in Joplin against the Premier team.
With the rain falling in the afternoon, it pushed back the finish of the first day of the second week at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City, but all game were concluded with the exception of one. The only exception is the game between Prince-Edward Island and Saskatchewan at the Pee-Wee Boys championship. The game will be played at 5 pm on Friday. In other Pee-Wee matchups, British Columbia beat New Brunswick 5-3. Alberta lost to Manitoba 8-5 and Québec shutout Newfoundland and Labrador by a score of 10-0. In the Midget championship, Alberta registered their first win of the tournament, 4-1 over British Columbia. Québec City shutout Saskatchewan 3-0 and Québec doubled up on New Brunswick by a score of 6-3. Nova Scotia came out on top of a tight game with Manitoba, shutting out the central province by a score of 1-0. Elsewhere, Ontario edged the host team Québec City, 5-4 in eight innings and Québec shutout Newfoundland and Labrador 7-0. Two one-sided games and three tight games were the story in the Bantam Boys championship. Nova Scotia and Québec take home a pair of lopsided wins, 10-1 and 20-0 respectively. Saskatchewan edged New Brunswick 8-7, while Québec City beat Ontario by one run, 4-3 and Manitoba fell to British Columbia by a final score of 4-3. Three pitchers put up dominant performances, two in winning causes, while the third was for a loss as day two of the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City got under way. Zach Breault of Amherstburg, Ontario threw a complete game shutout as Ontario (Windsor) beat Nova Scotia 6-1 in Junior championship action. Breault only allowed two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts to earn the win. The game between Ontario (Brantford) and British Columbia, also in Junior championship action, was a true pitchers duel as Bryan Mohon of Kamploops, B.C. battled Adam Reynolds of Guelph, Ontario with British Columbia taking the win, 1-0. Mohon threw a complete game shutout, allowing only two hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Reynolds threw six innings, allowing one run on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts to take the loss. In other Junior championship action, New Brunswick disposed of Manitoba by a final score of 6-1. At the Midget championships, British Columbia defeated Saskatchewan by a score of 7-1, Manitoba fell to Alberta 5-1 and Ontario crushed New Brunswick by a final of 10-1. British Columbia edged Ontario by a score of 3-2 and Saskatchewan took care of Manitoba, winning by a score of 9-5 in the Bantam championship. Colton Besse of Abbotsford, B.C. score four times while going 2-for-3 with an RBI as British Columbia handled Manitoba 13-1 in the Pee-Wee championship. Also in the Pee-Wee championship, Ontario made easy work of Alberta winning by a score of 12-2. Chinese Taipei took the lead early and never relinquished it as they would defeat the Junior National Team by a score of 6-1 in a seven inning ball game in Joplin, Missouri for the USA Exhibition Series. The Junior’s lone run of the ball game came in the fifth inning when Marcus Knecht of Toronto, Ontario drove in Leslie Williams of Scarborough, Ontario which completed the game’s scoring. Chinese Taipei jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning, three runs in the second inning and one in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Ming Jen Hsieh led the offence for Taipei going 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Cameron Gray of Toronto, Ontario lasted two innings on the mound, giving up all six runs on eight hits with two walks. Nick Fogarty followed Gray in relief and pitched four shutout innings, allowing only one hit with one walk and one strikeout. Defensively for the Canadians, Leslie Williams started a triple play with a wonderful diving catch, then throwing over to the first baseman Brett Sanders of Etobicoke, Ontario for the second out, who then threw over to second base to complete the play. The Junior National Team will attempt to get their revenge on Friday as their next game is against the same Chinese Taipei team. Game time is scheduled for 4 pm in Joplin.
As the evening games were getting underway, the rain began to fall, and fall heavily, which caused organizers to push back games to Saturday here at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City. All four championship divisions were affected as they each had to reschedule at least two games to Saturday. Some will resume from the point they were suspended while others were completely wiped out and will restart from the beginning. In the games that were completed, Nova Scotia doubled Newfoundland and Labrador 4-2 at the midget championship. Elsewhere, Manitoba edged Saskatchewan 2-1 and the host team Québec City took the loss against British Columbia by a score of 3-2. Logan Seifrit of Spruce Grove, Alberta threw a complete game with 17 strikeouts, but allowed seven runs on four hits as his Alberta team took the loss against New Brunswick 7-4 at the Pee-Wee championship. In other Pee-Wee action, Saskatchewan beat Nova Scotia 3-1. Prince Edward Island earned a win against Newfoundland and Labrador by a final score of 9-6, Ontario crushed Manitoba 11-0 and British Columbia fell to Québec City 10-9. Brodie MacDonald of Cornwall, P.E.I. dominated Newfoundland and Labrador, throwing a complete game and allowing only one run on two hits with four walks and nine strikeouts to earn the win by a 4-1 score in Bantam championship action. Elsewhere, Alberta beat Nova Scotia 12-10. British Columbia dominated New Brunswick by a score of 11-1 and it was the same story between Québec City and Saskatchewan with the host team taking it, 14-4. In extra innings, Newfoundland and Labrador edged Saskatchewan by a final score of 9-8 in 11 innings in the Junior championship. Also, Ontario beat New Brunswick 6-0. The rain caused some delays, but the opening matchups to begin week two of the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City were able to get underway. This week will feature the Junior, Midget, Bantam Boys and Pee-Wee Boys play for their respective national titles. The Pee-Wee championship saw some one-sided games to open the week. Ontario took out New Brunswick by a score of 8-0. The host team from Québec City crushed Manitoba 13-0 and Newfoundland and Labrador couldn’t keep up with Saskatchewan, falling by a score of 11-2. One game was a tighter as Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island battled to a 13-11 score with Nova Scotia taking the win. Dan Reid of Nasonworth, N.B. only allowed one run on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in five innings of work to earn the win for New Brunswick over Québec City, 5-3. Ben Sallows of Moncton, N.B. earned the save, shutting out the Québec City hitters over two innings pitched, allowing no hits while striking out three. Elsewhere, Ontario (Brantford) held off a late charge from Saskatchewan to take the win 12-7 and British Columbia shutout Newfoundland and Labrador by a final score of 6-0. At the Bantam championship, the host team began the tournament with a win, Québec City on top of Manitoba 8-3. In other Bantam action, New Brunswick took the loss against Ontario by a 3-1 score. Alberta earned their first win by beating Prince Edward Island 6-2 and Newfoundland and Labrador edged Nova Scotia, 3-2. Jonathan Slattery of Mississauga, Ontario was 3-for-4 with two runs socred and seven RBI, including a grand slam to help lead Ontario to a 13-2 win over Newfoundland and Labrador in five innings at the Midget championship. In other action, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia battled tooth and nail, with Ndew Brunswick taking it, edging Nova Scotia 7-6 and Québec City beat Manitoba by a score of 7-3. In the seventh inning of the gold medal game of the Baseball Canada Cup championship, heavy rain started to fall and suspended the game between British Columbia and Québec. The game will resume at 9 am Monday. British Columbia leads in the top of the seventh inning 5-0 with a runner on first and nobody out. In the bronze medal game, Ontario beat Saskatchewan by a score of 9-2 to capture third place. Champions were crowned however in all the other divisions at the Baseball Canada National Championships in Québec City. The host team Québec City won the gold medal in the Senior Men’s championship over Manitoba by a score of 5-1. British Columbia would take the bronze, beating Ontario (Oshawa) 7-3. Québec was victorious in both the Pee-Wee Girls and Bantam Girls as the Pee-Wee Québec girls came back from a 11-6 deficit to win 15-11 over British Columbia. Bantam Québec Girls took out Alberta by a score of 11-3. Québec City captured the bronze in both of these divisions. At the Senior Women’s championship, Ontario took home the gold medal over Alberta with a 6-2 win and Québec won the bronze with a convincing win over Nova Scotia.
