ROSEMONT, Ill. – Canada's Women's National Team erased a late deficit to defeat the United States 9-7 on Saturday afternoon at Impact Field, earning a comeback victory in the first of two exhibition games between the clubs ahead of the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Group Stage in Rockford, Illinois.
Trailing 7-6 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Jaida Lee (St. John's, NL) doubled with one out and later crossed the plate with the game-winning run to complete the comeback.
The United States jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening inning before Canada answered immediately. Ela Day-Bédard (Gatineau, QC) highlighted the response with a two-run double that tied the game at three.
After the Americans regained the lead in the second inning, Canada responded again in the bottom half. Emily Baxter (Oakville, ON) drew a bases-loaded walk before Day-Bédard delivered an RBI single to give Canada a 5-4 advantage.
The United States answered with two runs in the third inning to reclaim the lead and carried a one-run advantage into the sixth before Canada evened the score. Cassie Matlock (Edmonton, AB) delivered an RBI double to tie the contest and set the stage for Canada's decisive seventh-inning rally.
Day-Bédard paced Canada's offence, going 2-for-2 with three RBI, while Andréanne Leblanc (Mont-Saint-Hilaire, Que.) collected two doubles and drove in a run. Canada finished with 11 hits and showed patience at the plate by drawing six walks, with Kyanna Faucher (Beauce, QC reaching base twice via the free pass.
Canada used four pitchers in the victory. Michelle Roche (Burnaby, BC) made the start before Sarah Pengelly (Burnaby, BC) and Day-Bédard each worked two innings in relief. Alizée Gélinas (Trois-Rivières, QC) closed out the game with a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two.
Canada and the United States will wrap up their two-game exhibition series tomorrow, Sunday, July 19, at Impact Field in Rosemont, with first pitch scheduled for 5 p.m. ET.
Canada begins tournament play on July 22 against Hong Kong, followed by games against Korea (July 23), Mexico (July 24), the United States (July 25) and Australia (July 26). The top three teams in the six-team group will advance to the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup Finals in Rockford in 2027.
