18U World Cup: Canada uses long ball to thump Australia

TAICHUNG, Taiwan- Tyler O’Neill (Maple Ridge, BC) and Gareth Morgan (Toronto, ON) each hit two run home runs to highlight a 13 run eighth inning, while Jake Lumley (Windsor, ON) went 2-for-4 with four RBI’s as Canada trounced Australia 17-3 to claim seventh place at the 18U World Cup.

Seven Canadians had multi-hit games including Malik Collymore (Mississauga, ON) and Lachlan Fontaine (Vancouver, BC) with three each as Canada belted out 18 hits.

The 13 run eighth featured 13 hits and saw 14 consecutive batters reach base. Josh Naylor (Mississauga, ON) had three plate appearances in the inning.

Starting pitcher Daniel Procopio (Toronto, ON) gave Canada 6 2/3 solid innings on the mound allowing just two earned runs in a ballgame that was tied 3-3 after six innings.

Reliever Luke Manuel (Surrey, BC) struck out the only batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh to end the inning and Sean Ratcliffe (Ajax, ON) tossed a scoreless eighth to end the game due to the ten run mercy rule.

Josh Naylor got Canada on the board early as he lined a one-out double to left field scoring Chris Thibideau (Dartmouth, NS) and Jake Lumley (Windsor, ON) in the top of the first inning.

After a scoreless inning in the bottom of the first, starter Daniel Procopio did a nice job to get out of trouble with a runner on third and only one out by getting a strikeout and pop-out to second baseman Chris Thibideau to end the inning.

Australia got on the board in the third as Procopio issued a one-out walk before a double followed by two singles tied the score.

With one out, a tailor made double play ball was thrown away and all of a sudden Australia was up by one.

Canada was quick to respond in the fourth as Malik Collymore beat the pitcher to the bag after he hit a grounder to first with two out that allowed Gareth Morgan to score from third.

Although Canada’s tournament is finished there is still plenty of baseball to be played at the 18U World Cup including two more days of second round competition followed by medal games on Sunday.
