Golden Moment: Ontario Sweeps 15U and 16U Bantam Championships

Ottawa, ON – Team Ontario saved their best game for last as they rolled through their tournament with a perfect 6-0 record.  Each player stepped up when they needed to, and now they’re all going home with Gold medals around their necks.

On the Girls’ side, Ontario completely shut down the red hot and undefeated Québec to win their tournament.  The whole team had to play the best game of their lives, and they did just that.

15U Bantam Boys

Gold Medal Game

Ontario 8  British Columbia 1

With the score 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh inning, Ontario would take the game over by scoring five runs en route to winning the 15U Bantam Boys Championship.  The team steamrolled through the tournament with an undefeated record and proved that they were the best 15U team across the country.

Offensively, Rashad Collymore (Mississauga, ON) stood out in this game with three RBI and three runs scored.  Collymore had an inconsistent start to his tournament, but he elevated his game as each game got bigger and the pressure rose higher. Nicholas Virdo (Brampton, ON) was called upon to start the game, and he didn’t disappoint thowing six strong frames and striking out nine.

The victory marked a repeat performance from 2012 for Ontario, and they will head into 2014 looking for a three-peat as champions.

Bronze Medal Game

Québec 5  Nova Scotia 1

Québec made sure they would go home with something as they defeated Nova Scotia 5-1 to earn the Bronze medal.  The team came out with a blistering start as they put up a four-spot right away, and then relied on pitching and defense to carry them the rest of the way.

Mathieu Deneault-Gauthier (Candiac, QC) and Antoine Major (Candiac, QC) both drove in two runs, while Hakeem St-Jean (Montréal, QC) also had two hits.  William Boulanger-Elie (Ste-Julie, QC) threw a solid five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Semi-final #1

Ontario 5  Nova Scotia 2

Ontario relied on a full team effort to defeat Nova Scotia and advance to the Gold medal game later in the day.  Three different players had a RBI while five had at least one hit.  On the mound, Luke Van Rycheghem (Kent Bridge, ON) threw like an ace by going all seven innings and allowing only two hits while striking out an incredible sixteen batters.  He also picked up two hits and one RBI at the plate.

Semi-final #2

British Columbia 9  Québec 3

Rhys Cratty (Cloverdale, BC) smacked two triples and drove in two runs to ignite BC’s offense as they punched their ticket to the Gold medal game.  Noah Or (Richmond, BC) also joined the triples parade, picking up a two-run triple of his own.  Tyler Hoefer (North Delta, BC) was cool and collected on the mound all game, going the distance and striking out nine batters.

16U Bantam Girls Invitational

Gold Medal Game

Ontario 7  Québec 1

Everyone knew that in order for Ontario to win, they would need to shut down Québec’s stifling offense.  Well, that’s exactly what Hailey Boyd (Port Dover, ON) and Jenna Hillman (Tecumseh, ON) did.  Boyd allowed only two hits in five and one-third innings while Tillman gave up only one to record the final four outs.

Hillman was a rock for Ontario all tournament long, but nowhere more so than at the plate where she record thirteen hits and fourteen RBI in seven games!  In this affair, she once again performed admirably with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.

It was sweet victory for Ontario as they avenged last year’s finals loss to Québec.  Expect these two teams to renew their rivalry again next year.

Bronze Medal Game

British Columbia 11  Newfoundland and Labrador 1

BC scored seven runs in the fourth inning to pull away from Newfoundland Labrador and capture the Bronze medal.  BC had this game in control the whole time, and they would put the game completely out of reach and win it in five innings.

Taylor Knight (North Vancouver, BC) and Sara Miki (Kelowna, BC) combined for five hits, seven RBI, and four runs scored to lead the offense while Lora Miki (Kelowna, BC) would score on three separate occasions.
