Provincial Preview: New Brunswick

With the 2013 baseball season right around the corner Baseball.ca will visit with each of the 10 Provincial organizations during a 10 week period. This week we meet with Baseball New Brunswick’s David Dion.

Although it’s still early in the process, registration numbers look to be on the rise in New Brunswick with the majority coming at the lower age categories.

“These increases can be accredited to the hard working volunteers and the passion they have to grow the sport of baseball along with the aid of great programs such as Rally Cap, NCCP, Winterball, and others available through Baseball Canada,” said Baseball New Brunswick Executive Director, David Dion. “Baseball New Brunswick and all of its members are committed to grow and strengthen the baseball community in our province.”

As is the case across the country, the Rally Cap program continues to grow each year in New Brunswick with associations jumping on board each year.

“The feedback from those who have already switched to Rally Cap and those who are in the process are amazed at the benefits of the program,” explained Dion. “These include increased player development, increased participant numbers, and positive feedback from the parents.”

Baseball Canada’s ‘My First Pitch’ program is all set to roll out this year and Dion says that Baseball New Brunswick is excited to implement the program that is designed to introduce the fundamentals of pitching.

“Pitching is an important part of baseball in which all players of the game should learn the fundamentals,” added Dion who says that several associations can’t wait to begin using the program. “This program is a great tool for all baseball associations to assist in the growth of our sport.”

New Brunswick is amongst the leaders in Canada in having local associations apply for the RBI Approved program (Reaching Baseball Ideals). Three associations, Dieppe, Fredericton, and Bathurst Minor Baseball joined Moncton Minor Baseball earlier this year in reaching the criteria that’s required to become RBI Approved.

Dion says that others are soon to come.

“With the increased drive to create better programs for youth in sport in the province of New Brunswick several other associations are looking to ‘reach baseball ideals’ (RBI) and we are looking forward to working with our members to add several more names to the RBI Approved list in the near future.”

The baseball calendar in New Brunswick is packed with events that you will not want to miss in 2013.

Fredericton will play host to Baseball Canada's Atlantic 13U (Peewee) Championship September 5-8 as last year's defending champions the Fredericton Royals look to defend their title against seven other teams from across the Atlantic provinces.

A Girls Baseball Day is planned for mid-July along with two Pitch Hit and Learn Clinics which are full day clinics that includes three hours of instruction on hitting and fielding, and three hours of instruction on pitching for boys and girls 9-13.

Former major leaguer and current Baseball Canada Vice President Jason Dickson and Baseball New Brunswick Senior League player and former Triple Crown winner Dave Barr will be the main instructors.

A highlight of the summer will surely be when the Toronto Blue Jays Honda Super Camp rolls into Moncton August 5-7 at Kiwanis Park.

The list of instructors is impressive as Hall of Famer Roberto Alomar will be on hand along with two-time World Series champion Duane Ward and former Jays Juan Beniquez and Homer Bush.
