21U Women’s: Ontario to meet Québec for gold

Fans in Stonewall, Manitoba were treated some tremendous baseball at the 21U Women’s Invitational as semi-final games were played.

In the first semi final pitting top seed Nova Scotia against fourth seed Québec, seven innings weren’t enough as it took ten for Québec to eventually come out on top, 7-4.

Québec went up 4-2 in the top of the ninth on a single from Arianne Levesque and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded, but Nova Scotia stormed back with two runs, on RBI from Mackenzie Pinet and Emily MacFadyen to tie the score.

Québec took the lead for good in the top of the tenth getting a two run double from Sena Catterall while Levesque’s single gave them an insurance marker. Isabella Denis came out for her fourth inning of work in the bottom of the tenth and worked around a lead off walk to get the win.

Lindsay Wilcox drilled a base-hit to centre in the bottom of the seventh to score Elizabeth Plamondon and give Ontario a 5-4, walk-off win over hos Manitoba.

Ontario had taken a 4-2 lead in the sixth but the pesky Manitobans fought back with two in the seventh to tie the score. Jamie Johnson and Caitloin Wilkinson each had hits and RBI for Manitoba.

Tess Forman was the story on the mound tossing a complete game with one strikeout to earn the win.

Nova Scotia will meet host Manitoba for the bronze medal (11AM ET) while Ontario and Québec will play for gold  (2PM ET) for the third year in a row.

Earlier in the day, Québec got three doubles and four RBI from Marie-France Castillo to defeat Saskatchewan, 16-0.

Nova Scotia clinched first place in the round-robin standings using a walk-off, 4-3, win over Manitoba where Katie Hagen scooted home from third base on passed ball with the winning run.
