Baseball Canada announces 2013 Calendar of Events

OTTAWA- Baseball Canada is pleased to announce the 2013 Calendar of Events highlighting key dates for the upcoming baseball season.

Baseball Canada enjoyed a successful year in 2012 as both the Women’s National Team (bronze) and the Junior National Team (silver) brought home medals from their respective world championships, while the Senior Men won the World Baseball Classic Qualifier in Germany with a dominant performance.

The 2013 calendar promises to be busy with many great events planned including the 3rd version of the World Baseball Classic which gets underway for Canada when we take on Italy on March 8th in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“With spring just around the corner it is an exciting time as we look forward to another great year of baseball in Canada and with our National Teams on the international scene,” says Director General of Baseball Canada Jim Baba. “We had a very special year in 2012 and hope to build on that success in 2013.

“Our partnership with the Blue Jays continues to grow which is very exciting for amateur baseball in Canada.”

Canada’s only MLB team has been doing tremendous work across the country to promote baseball at the amateur level. In January, they hosted a National Coaches Clinic attended by nearly 400 amateur coaches and their popular Honda Super Camps will be going coast-to-coast in 2013 for a third consecutive summer.

The Baseball Canada National Teams Awards Banquet and Fundraiser took place on January 12th as alumni, corporate partners and friends gathered in Toronto for a memorable evening. Fifteen year MLB veteran Ryan Dempster of Gibsons, BC was inducted onto Baseball Canada’s Wall of Excellence presented by RBC Wealth Management.

In February, a group of Bantam girl’s will head down to Cuba for the fourth straight year to participate in a Development Camp. The camp serves as an opportunity for young female players to gain a baseball and cultural experience in a country where baseball is the #1 sport.

The World Baseball Classic will feature 16 countries vying for baseball supremacy in a best-on-best tournament. After the opener against Italy, Canada will take-on Mexico on March 9th and the United States on March 10th.

The Junior National Team begins their preparation towards the 2013 IBAF 18U World Championship when they assemble in April and May for their annual trips to ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida and the Dominican Republic respectively.

A date and location for the World Championship is scheduled to be announced in February.

On the administrative side of things, the Baseball Canada Annual General Meeting will take place in Toronto June 7th and 8th bringing together representatives from each of the 10 Provincial offices.

Baseball Canada’s showcase event, the Baseball Canada Cup, will take place as part of the Canada Summer Games August 3rd-7th in Sherbrooke, QC.

The 18U/Midget and 21U/Junior National Championships will take place August 15th-19th, while the Senior Men, 13U Peewee Western, 15U/Bantam Boys and 15U/Bantam Girls are set for August 22nd-26th.

The 13U/Peewee Atlantic National Championship will be held September 5th-9th to wrap up championship season.

Date and location for the Senior Women Invitational is still to be determined. The Women’s National Team will assemble following this event for a summer tour as they prepare for the 2014 IBAF Women’s World Cup.

As always the final event on the baseball calendar is the Baseball Canada Fall Convention slated for October 24th -27th in Halifax.

Please check back to www.baseball.ca  as dates and locations for events will be entered on the calendar once they become available.
