Canada Rolls to 10-0 Five-Inning Victory Over Brazil

The Junior National Team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, earning a 10-0 victory in five innings over Brazil in the opening game of the Placement Round at the U-18 Pan American Championship.

Canada wasted little time taking control, sending four runs across in the bottom of the first inning. Sam Ellis (La Pêche, QC) was hit by a pitch to open the frame before Elliot Lascelles (Toronto, ON) reached on an error and Maxime Blain (Repentigny, QC) walked to load the bases.

Jalen Jacob (Maple, ON) followed with a two-run single up the middle to open the scoring. After Dayne Liske (Drayton Valley, AB) drew a walk, Kadyn Armitage (Surrey, BC) was hit by a pitch to force home another run before Taye Thierman (Calgary, AB) worked a bases-loaded walk to stretch the advantage to 4-0.

Joseph Pereira (Etobicoke, ON) made the early lead stand up with a strong performance on the mound. The right-hander worked four scoreless innings, allowing just three hits while striking out five to earn the win. He retired the side in order in both the first and third innings and kept Brazil off the board after a pair of singles created a fourth-inning threat.

Canada added two more runs in the third. Cohen Miller (Calgary, AB) and Liske drew walks before Zach MacDonald (Lacombe, AB) singled to load the bases. Thierman brought Miller home with another bases-loaded walk before Ellis singled through the left side to score Liske and make it 6-0.

The Juniors put the game out of reach with four more runs in the fourth. Blain and Miller reached on walks before Liske singled down the right-field line to bring Blain home. An error on the play also allowed Miller to score before MacDonald doubled to deep right to bring home Liske. Armitage later scored on an error to push Canada’s advantage to 10-0.

Ramsey Chung (Mississauga, ON) took over on the mound in the fifth and worked a scoreless frame to complete the shutout and seal the five-inning victory.

Canada will continue Placement Round action at the U-18 Pan American Championship against Mexico on Monday, October 26.
